Bioshock Infinite or The Last Of Us

2013 has brought forth two amazing and stellar games from creative minds and fantastic studios. Though, different in terms of genre, these two games share a common fact: They are emotional provoking, incredibly scripted and awe-inspiring stories that make it unbelievable video game experiences that I think have set the bar for storytelling in video games. The worlds that you traverse in both games are fascinating, scarce, beautiful and glorious to behold. After beating both games, I just like state that these two games, who are both GOTY contenders for sure, I would just like to know what people would prefer. I did the same post on the Last of Us message board, but now I am gonna do it here. So, what did you think of both, what do you truly admire from each, and which one did you like best?

Just finished Bioshock Infinite half an hour ago. I don't know, the graphics were at times pretty damn amazing, and the story well above average for an FPS. It just didn't hook me in the way that The Last of Us did - and I didn't even play that game myself - I watched a playthrough on YouTube. I have a PS3 laying around gathering dust, and I went to three different stores, all of which were sold out; so I simply did a YouTube marathon instead. Apart from a couple Final Fantasy games and possibly one or two other games, TLoU tells one of the best stories ever conceived in a video game, in my opinion.

I did like Elizabeth in Bioshock though; she was a doll. And one of the few AI companions in any game that weren't just annoying and does nothing but get in the way. She even moves when you go into iron sights and point at her, and walks ahead of you instead of always trailing behind.

The moment when you enter Columbia for the first time after the baptism scene may be the most jawdropping gaming experience I've had this year (I play on the PC @ max graphics), and I've taken probably 50 screenshots which are now running as a slideshow on my desktop.

Last of Us doesn't nearly draw me in as much as Infinite did. Infinite for sure gets my vote.

Oh my god... are people actually saying that bioshock infinite is superior to the last of us?!?!?!?!?!?!

Anyone who says that literally has zero validity to their opinion. I have no idea how people were drawn into this game more so than the last of us.

This game feel like it was created for 12-14 year olds, and they were afraid of alienating their audience so they did everything they could to keep it simple, linear, and easy.

I mean, this game basically amounts to going from A to B while being blocked by a dozen of the same enemies with some slightly stronger enemies peppered into it once in a while. While you could say the same for last of us, there was so much more to that game in terms of strategy and atmosphere that really pulled you in. There is no strategy to this game as enemies rush you, dont communicate, and never require specific strategies besides good aim.

You could have completely removed the vigors from the game and i doubt it would make much of a difference in terms of difficulty and playability. It wasnt even exciting to get new spells as most of them were pretty situational, and since the fighting was pretty chaotic, there isnt much use applying strategy. You can mow down enemies with just your gun just as fast as if you used spells. Most of the time you are better off not even bothering with using vigors as they sometimes just mess with what would have been a few easy headshots to end a battle.

This game feels like you just kinda get plopped into a warzone where everyone wants you dead and some girl with magic powers want to find out what a gigantic metal bird wants. Seriously... what?

Bioshock is literally a point A to B shooter with a few weak rpg elements peppered into it to trick people into thinking theres more to it. A lot of people are simple minded, so a lot of people will enjoy this game. If you arent one of them, dont feel bad, it just means you need more mental stimulation to be entertained than those that love this game lol.

Started playing BI and it's not gripping me at all, feels like I've been here before, too similar to the original. I don't get the hype, its going to be a grind, I don't think it looks that great either, FPS are starting to bore me now, nothing new for years now. TLoU is in a different league to this game and is easily game of the year so far, the only game I can see challenging is GTA V.

Just finished Bioshock there and WOW what an ending!! But TLOU is amazing and is better then almost every game out there. So for me,TLOU is better

Brought both Bioshock Infinite and TLOU.

Wasn't interested in getting either game but since I had nothing new to play I decided to go for them.

Watched the entire TLOU walkthrough on youtube. Wasn't impressed. It was cliche and unoriginal. After playing Tomb Raider and Telltale's The Walking Dead which the TLOU didn't even come close to that type of storytelling and characters in TWD or gameplay of TR.

Just started playing TLOU this morning and just got past the whole section with Bill. I don't feel any emotion or care for any of the characters. The visuals are nice but the game so far is too damn slow and the stealth elements suck. Crafting and Upgrading is good. But overall I'm not really seeing the hype. Its overrated so far.

Not a big Bioshock fan. Didn't play 1 but watched a walkthrough and story was good. Played Bioshock 2 which was trash. Played Bioshock Infinite. I liked it. It had flaws. Song Bird should've appeared more and been a boss fight. Comstock was hardly in it as the villain. But the relationship between Booker and Elizabeth was done better and Elizabeth herself was awesome. Overall I had more fun with that.

id be interested in what kind of game grips someone who thinks the last of us is a forgettable experience.

I gotta say that watching a walkthrough of a game really doesnt do it justice. But since you thought the last of us was a boring game, i wouldnt really bother trying to recommend any titles to you lol.

People like hajkm-24 just hate anything popular lol.

Finished TLOU yesterday morning. I was right. It was boring as hell. Visually nice and great motion capture performances but the overall gameplay and narrative suck. Its repetitive as hell and doesn't offer anything new to the table. Felt like Naughty Dog were experimenting in how to perhaps create a open world game but it just fails. The Infected were s..t. The Infected in Uncharted 1 were more scary because they slowly built up to it. Here they just throw it into your face.

Bioshock might just be a typical broken FPS but in my opinion the fact the FPS sections don't feel as fast paced as COD for example is what sets apart along with the way the combat is designed making it unique in its own way. Plus the environment and life that's in it along with the characters and premise is a hell of alot more interesting than the whole survivors/end of the world aspect that's been done to death and better.

The real question one has to ask is, how do you rate a game? From a core gamer's perspective or from that of a console hipster. The answer is different on each end and it's obvious on both.

Hajikm-24 you are a liar, you did not play through the last of us. It is sad when people like yourself try to bolster their arguements with blatant lies.

The single player campaigns on basically every COD game ive played (only beat 4 of the campaigns) play exactly like bioshock ininite in terms of pacing so its obvious you were talking out of your ass on that one lol. Especially since the ONLY things that give BI any uniqueness, is the extremely underused hook, and the forgettable vigors.

The upgrades on vigors were way too expensive, and very rarely were more valuable than gun upgrades. At least in previous bioshock games, the currency to upgrade guns and powers were not dumbed down into 1 currency, forcing you to choose. Actually even the gun upgrades were pretty forgettable. You could easily go through this game without using vigors or upgrading your guns. It really wouldnt be that hard, especially since there is almost no loss when you die, and elizabeth constantly hooks you up with ammo/health in the middle of battles.

BI is what happens to a series when it caters to casual/unskilled gamers. Those that think the story was compelling really need to read/play/watch more entertainment. The whole time loop storyline has been done to death just as much as the Post-Apocalyptic Survival storyline. At least in post-apocalyptic stories, there is a sense of urgency where as time loop stories just feel like you are going in circles to find out an obvious conclusion.

I also have no idea how you could find TLOU repetitive and BI not to be. Considering every battle consists of a few headshots against AI-less enemies in BI where nothing you do really matters and the best strategy is to just shoot whatever comes at you. At least in TLOU you are required to use strategy and skill.

I just am baffled at Hajikm-24 and how much he lies and talks out of his ass. Nothing of what he says is solid. Every complaint he has about TLOU is not valid, and what he thinks BI has over other games, is just plain not true. Everything you say sounds like second-hand opinion and perspective. Hajikm-24 never played any of the COD single players, nor did he beat TLOU lol. I dont even believe he tried TLOU for more than 20 or so minutes (and was already determined to hate it lol).

So in conclusion, Hajikm-24 is the type of person that believes that they KNOW what is good and what is bad without any real reason to think so. Bioshock infinite is a game for kids, and people with the mental capacity of a child. It just is not a good game. Bioshock infinite is at best a very geneous 7/10.

That was a fun essay lmao. It just bothers me that people think BI is more than just another mediocre shooter, and it REALLY bothers me when they think its superior to anything (thats popular) that has ever been released in the genre lmao.

Bioshock Infinie was a great play, I loved the story. The last of us was amazing aswell it felt like a movie.
I liked BI a little more tho because it has more action.

My vote goes to Bioshock Infinite. I loved the story especially the ending and I felt like Yahtzee explained The Last of Us best, it is the video game equivalent of Oscar bait.

reply

My vote would have to go to Bioshock, just finished it two weeks ago and am still thinking about it, just required more thinking. Dont get me wrong i still give them both a solid 10. But Bioshock just affected me like no other game has before.
