Not to be confused with 500 Days of Summer

I confess I fell for the tag "from the studio that brought you 500 Days of Summer" and I decided to check the trailer out, but after seeing it loaded with cliché after cliché, it has really put me off from ever watching it. It simply boggles my mind how the studio is trying to sell this movie to the same audience who liked 500 Days of Summer, when it clearly has more in common with generic romantic comedies.

"500 Days of Summer" was a hit because it resonated with audiences -in particular, straight males in their 20s/30s- that normally don't like romantic comedies. It was an atypical story in which the guy is the one who fell in love and got his heart broken, which is why it connected with them so well, including myself.

That said, the story of this movie does not seem to be bring anything new to the table, and it may work well with women who like "Sex and The City" or the standard romantic comedy. I have no doubt that the actors and filmmakers gave it their best, but I am surprised that Fox actually produced an independent film with such a trite story and is trying to market it as something new and refreshing (like "500 Days of Summer") when many other mainstream, big studio romantic comedies have effective covered this subject before.

You don't know it actually won't be a good movie. Wait for reviews. I loved SUMMER. It's my favorite movie of 2009. And I still think this looks great. Not as great as that, but really enjoyable.

I don't think reviews will make me change my mind. Trailers are supposed to get people interested in the movie and this one didn't do the trick for me. It is full of blatant cliches, for instance, brokenhearted girl going on an eating binge with her girlfriend ( "OMG... I'm power-eating!!).

My point is that the studios are hoping to sell it to the same crowd who has seen "Summer", but these movies are not in the same vein. What are they thinking?

Your instincts are correct. It was a massive "yawn". Being hip is not the same as making great film.
This was a huge miss and not significant in any way shape or firm and it has the untalented Greta in it and that makes for great PR but a crapfest of a film.

I saw the trailer, this looks terrible.

I don't agree. I saw this movie at the Tribeca Film Festival without having seen the trailer nor read the comparison with "500 Days of Summer" beforehand. And my first thought was to compare it with "500 Days..." as it was a pretty smart and funny indie romantic comedy.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS:

Maybe it seems like any rom-com in the trailer but I felt that it wasn't. The biggest reason is that Lola is not dumped by some a-hole guy who it turns out was wrong for her all along. In fact - over the course of the movie there are several moments when you are hoping they will get back together again and the audience can definitely relate to the boyfriend who left her. That - and a few other things - just made the story so much more real than most romantic comedy crap which follows the formula completely.

When compared to "500 Days..." I think that the former is the better movie, more clever, more indie, more unique and guys will definitely relate to it more - as there is a guy in the lead. To me tho "Lola..." was actually the funnier of the two and still indie enough for my taste. And I think some guys could relate as the dumping boyfriend is not alienated and made into a stereotype character. The thing I disliked most with "Lola Versus" was when Lola started dating that next rollerblader guy. That was just plain silly!

But all in all - this is the best romantic comedy I have seen since "500 Days..." and I think it's well worth a watch.

At least Lola didn't have the contrived-Hollywood-must-have-the-two-end-up-together- ending 95% of movies have. I found that refreshing. It IS okay to be alone.
