JoyFul Noise Budget said to be $32mil

Variety is reporting budget at $32mil! Why! What for? There aren't any AA listers in it demand a big salary and it's just regular people singing in choir shot in Georgia. No stunts, location shots, where is the money going?

Will it be able to dom $60+ mil to turn profit? Seems like big budget, more than Dirty dancing, Fame etc.

You obviously don't know much about budgeting for a professional film. I don't know much about budgeting for a professional film either but I do know about budgeting for small independent short films. Common sense tells me that a film doesn't need to have a bunch of big named actors or directors tacked on to rack up that amount of debt. It takes a lot of money to produce a film. 32 million sounds like a lot but in the movie industry it's probably about average. Insurance, employing miscellaneous film crew and staff members, housing, transportation, equipment and materials, food, electric utility bills, permits, location and set fee's, security, etc can really add up and that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to all the things they have to pay for. I'm sure they could have save some money in some areas but choose not to, but I still don't see anything wrong with a professional feature length film spending 32 million. It's not like they are making you go see the film.

Well since you seem to know the budgets of a bunch of movies already then it shouldn't be too hard for you to research why this movie had the budget it did. Does it really matter why they spent what they did? I still don't think 36 mill for this type of film is a lot. Not saying I think they should have spent more but it seems about right to me. But I really don't care to contact the producer and ask for a break down lol. Maybe you should try since it seems to matter to you that much.

it seems overbudgeted for me because the plot ain't never gonna be blockbuster at the movies
ow was $11.5M
it ain't gonna make it prod and promo budget back with no oversels $$

Queen ain't no A list actress to command $10 or $15mil neither is dolly or the other ppl in it
tell me what was the need to spend $32mil on for shoot in georgia

The soundtrack to the movie alone. Think about it: it consists of "Man in the Mirror" by Michael Jackson "Maybe I'm Amazed" by Paul MccCartney, and other pop songs that probably had a hefty little price tag to procure the rights to use. That's a big chunk of the budget right there.

None of the other films you mentioned were musicals, or had a soundtrack that included iconic songs.

Plus the promotion for 'Joyful Noise' seemed pretty extensive and therefore pretty expensive. They aired previews during X-Factor commercial breaks and Sunday night sports. They had the poster plastered across every mall. I heard urban radio stations promoting it heavily. All of which wasn't free.

those movies i listed had promo too, they all do and print/ad usually is cited separately from budget so that would mean total production budget and promo was over $40mi even worse.

i don't think they paying more than $200k for beatles/stevie wonder/sly stone song. the rest less and it still won't amount to more than $3mil

too big a budget = unrecoupable costs

The budget for the movie is actually $25 million.

And the movie has already grossed over $26 million, so well see if it can gross more than that. Probably will.

reply

Yep. The budget was $25mil. The gross in US theaters was $32mil and was #1 in dvd sales the first couple of weeks after it's release. It made it's money back.
