Similar plot?

Just finished watching Extremely Loud & Incredbly Close. Was struck by the many similar plot points in both films. Love them both!

One of the two films was shot first, but the other film was released first.

'Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life' was an independently produced film shot from 8/9/2010 to 9/4/2010 and released to DVD 3/6/2012. It premiered at Cinema Village on September 29, 2011, in New York City, but no distributor was found to release it theatrically.

'Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close' was filmed in conjunction with Warner Bros. studios (on an estimated budget of $40,000,000), was shot from March, 2011, to July, 2011, had a limited US theatric release 12/25/2011 (6 theaters), a wide release 1/20/2012 (2630 theaters) distributed by Warner Bros., and grossed $31,847,881 at the US box office.

Both films involve a boy whose father died (one 5 years in the past; the other one recently) and whose father had left something (one a locked box; the other one a key) that propelled the boy on a search (one for keys to unlock the box; the other one for whatever the key would unlock).
