Genndy's watched it. He has to have. The influence is too obvious.

It's really frightening what passes for 'enlightment' these days.

Yeah, you could be right. He seems to be a huge fan of mecha anime.

However, I think Voltron plays a big part as an influence. http://toynami.com/images/popup_voltron02.jpg http://alluraandkeith.homestead.com/files/Keith_affirms.jpg Even Dexter's Laboratory's original series finale (Before it got uncancelled.) was a Voltron parody, so Tartakovsky clearly already knows his Voltron.

Go Nagai's basic creation of the genre as it is was most likely an influence as well. One of the leads even looks like the heroes he often draws.

It's interesting to see Tartakovsky bring so many influences together. As with Samurai Jack, we're getting more obvious stuff thrown together with the most obscure nerd masterpieces around (like the influence of Little Prince and the Eight Headed Dragon on Samurai Jack and that of Yoshinori Kanada's animation on Clone Wars).

I do hope Genndy busts out some "human bomb" level tonal shift in this series, what with that PG rating. That's precisely what modern American cartoons need to get a much needed kick in the ass.

Yeah there's definitely a lot of old Super Robot influences being used here. This may be one of the few series in the history of animated television which has a fan-base composed of both Super-Robot-loving-30-somethings AND adolescents-completely-oblivious-to-the-references! Genndy is a freakin' genius.
