Not only was the story well written and well played.... but I found personal touch-points that made the story all the more touching for me.

My mom's uncles all served in some branch of the armed forces in WWII.

Mom's brothers were both in the Navy stationed in or near the Philippines... though that was probably about the Korean war era.

Most recently, my brother-in-law (a Navy pilot) lost one of his best friends and colleague Lt. Miroslav "Steve" Zilberman... aka "Abrek" when Steve's plane suffered engine trouble just 5 miles or so away from the carrier while returning from his mission over Afghanistan. Auto pilot wasn't an option, so he ordered his crew to bail out while he held the plane steady enough for the crew to jump and clear safely. Some wreckage was found, but Steve was lost and presumed dead, leaving a young wife and 2 small children. At least that widow can be nearly 100% certain that he is gone as the plane went down far, far from any land. I cannot imagine the anguish and uncertainty of "MIA" as in the movie.

I've cried a few tears at movies before, but I was like uncontrollably sobbing at this one.

Betty White just killed at the end - very moving.

Do what you like,
like what you do.

I had the same reaction--that was sooo cliche! They should have ended with her seeing the rosebud blooming. This movie had potential and some very moving parts, but the ham-handed direction got tedious. I understand she dies at the end of the book, but for a movie it just didn't work. They might as well have show her getting into a spaceship.
