Question about the ending?

Did Betty White's character die at the end, when she is shown with her husband, in the garden, and he has his arms around her, and all of a sudden, the garden hose falls from her hands?

reply

In another thread they say that in the book they reunite in Heaven so I guess according to the book she does die.

reply

Yes, that was my interpretation, too, especially as they show the grandson and the reporter together, sort of the 'passing of the torch.'

At first I thought she died, but then her grandson and Jennifer Love Hewitt, both standing right there, do not react as though something happened to her, so then I decided she was still alive.

But if it is happening simultaneously, they might not have noticed yet, as they are hugging under the sprinkler.

I totally agree. First time I saw it I didn't catch that the hose falling was her dying. Second watch, husband caught it. That was his interpretation. And he said, "Think about movies like Driving Miss Daisy. When Idela dies, what do you see? A dropped bowl of peas. If you don't want to focus on the drama of the death part, seeing someone die, you can focus on something being dropped. Good point, I agree.

But her grandson was in the front yard, she was around back.

That was my interpretation. I could be wrong, but at that same moment, it seemed that her feet changed from the old woman's to the young woman's. It seemed to signify that they were now together again as when they were young. He came to bring her to heaven.

I had taped this movie and the ending was cut off just as they showed Betty White's husband's feet appear behind hers...how much of the ending did I miss? I presume it was pretty darn close, but oh, how frustrating!!!

reply

girls! she's not die, she just imagined her husband. Dont confused, i know it!

reply

it kinda had that titanic ending when rose meets jack at the stairwell - and rose is at the age when jack died - like they met in heaven.. i guess you can interpert anyway you want that is the whole point; the movie was beautifully done - including the ending of the movie.

reply

Yes, she passed away at the end of the movie; she was finally reunited with her huband in heaven.

As many of you, I thought she died at the end. The comment about the grandson and reporter not noticing is that they were in the front yard and she was in the back yard. If you put together earlier scenes in the movie, the back yard was where that particular rose bush was.

Here it is 2021 and I just saw this movie for the first time. I agree with those who feel Caroline (Betty White) died at that moment she dropped the garden hose. I haven't cried this hard during a movie in a long time. This was such a beautiful movie. and the ending was gloriously done.
