Why did Irwin (spoiler)...

close and lock that door on Kim when Harrington was attacking her? Was it because she was unlikeable, or he thought she was infected already?

reply

I think it was a combination of those things, but mainly, Irwin represented the self-preservation component in all of us. That is, he was capable of sacrificing others in order to save himself.

reply

Irwin turned out to be a weasely pos when the stress levels hit, how did he ever make it past the psych evals?

reply

I was going to ask this question myself.

I think people pass psych tests as they know it is only a simulation and therefore not real. No matter how life-like the exam is, it's not really stressful if you know you can't get hurt or die.

It made absolutely NO sense whatsoever for him to turn out to be the weasally character. During the first few scenes he was the empathetic, rational one trying to maintain calm between the team, so for him just to suddenly turn into a quivering, cowardly wreck was a betrayal of not only the character but the audience that had falsely been led to warm to him. In other words, it was very bad writing with NO understanding for character. If they wanted a cowardly jerkass character they should have killed off Irwin early on, and let him die with dignity, and had Harrington or one of the others turn traitor.

reply

It made every sense, he even tells us why in the first act himself - people never really change, put them under enough pressure and you find out who they really are

reply

A bit of everything I think. Another point is that the infected guy trying to kill Kim was right behind her so there was a huge chance they wouldn't have been able to close the door on him after she got out.
It was still a bit mean.

reply

Very quickly the film established her as a cold bitch whom everyone clearly hated so it came as no surprise. I was rather glad for her to get killed off that early.

reply

OMG! Because they were ripping off Alien! DUH! People, buy yourselves a brain. Just one of the 9999 things they ripped off from Alien/Prometheus.

reply

Mostly out of cowardice. Partly because he didn't like her.

Also as someone mentioned, they saw a scene like that in Aliens and decided to copy it.
