How Selfish can Humans be!

It made me so sad watching this movie. I simply can't believe how selfish humans can be. This poor baby Orca so badly wanted to be with his pod. Instead, humans insisted he remain their playmate. The DFO, upon the very first contact, should have relocated him to his pod. The DFO lady interviewed in the film was thinking along the proper biological lines, but forgot to act upon them fast enough. It's not like his pod was unknown... his pod is known, identified, tracked, his birth was identified early on.

We relocate bears, wolves, cougars, reptiles, birds, we relocate all animals in need of their groups if they belong to species which aren't in excessive numbers. We even relocate them sometimes when they ARE in excessive numbers (certain birds, alligators).

But no, here the human greed to be able to say "I touched it" was more important than the Orca's need to be with his pod. The idiots in the movie kept talking about "friendship", they were wrong! He wasn't looking for friendship in that disgusting superficial way that we see on Facebook or between kids with cell phones. He needed the intense bonding 'friendship' of his pod, something no human on earth can possibly give him.

The death of Luna should loom heavily on the conscience of every single selfish citizen who fought to keep Luna away from his pod. It should also loom heavily on the government, for failing in its role of protector of wildlife.

Luna was essentially murdered by parasitic human TLC. When will people ever learn.

He did not "chose" to remain at the sound, he was lost! Have you not ever tried removing a child from a wrong location and have the child throw a fit cuz he would only move for his mother. There is no such a thing as a whale "chosing" humans over its pod... that is human delusion. This entire film was about human delusions, it was endlessly sad.

You seem to have missed the entire section of the film where people WANTED to relocate the whale and the Canadian government told them no...until the government finally had their hand forced and they made plans to capture and sell him to an aquarium.

The selfish person in this film is the government woman who got traumatized by an injured beluga whale and made it her personal mission to prevent anyone from getting close to this killer whale in the misguided notion that it would somehow save him.

I'm always amused by people who, through their actions or words, reveal that they consider humans to be outside of nature - which is scientifically, logically, and "common sensically" wrong. This woman is one of those people. Her actions were directly responsible for the ultimate fate of this whale.

She didn't even realize the hypocrisy when she says - with a straight face no less - that the people who wanted to interact with the whale were just thinking that they knew what was best for the whale and that they shouldn't because we can't understand it. She had just succinctly stated EXACTLY what she was doing, all while condemning them for the same thing. But since she had the might of the government behind her, she got what she wanted while the whale and the people got misery and death.

Yes there are a few people who wanted it returned to its pod, but the majority of players in this film were happy to see the Orca desperate.

how easy would it be with todays technology to transfer Luna 200 fraking miles to his family?!

oBviously , people messed up!

so easy to do!

if they can capture an orca and ship it to Dubai, Im sooooooo sure then can do capture it and ship it 200 miles south. Oh my freaking gosh! the idiots!

my point is they messeed up royallyy! and so forth.

I feel bad for Luna, He could have lived 60 years they said!
instead nope!
Such an easy plan was thwarted! and it makes me upset after watching the movie/film.

In Khazikstan we treat bear with more respect.

also, our national wine is fermented horse urine and we like it.

Luna was being sold to SeaWorld for couple million dollars. The money would have been great for the small town...

Do you think your town would have been given that money? I feel pessimistic because my thought would be the town wouldn't see a penny and the government would have used the cash to fund their own pensions.

Yes, humans failed this poor little orca terribly. We can't even get a stranded orca to join her family.

I disagree completely. Did you watch the movie? They were going to try to have him meetup with the pod in a very populated area. We don't know if they would've grouped up. The documentary showed several scientists who study whales expressing serious doubt that the plan would work. Don't you remember that?

If it didn't work the orca would've been taken to an aquarium. That is the equivalent of prison pretty much. So the town was weighing: 1. let him stay in the harbor and get eventually killed by a boat 2. Send him to meet with his pod and likely get recaptured and taken to sea world.

So, I completely agree with what they did. No matter how bad he wanted to join his pod doesn't mean it would've happened. I'm guessing you don't know more than the scientists who weighed in saying that it wasn't very likely to work. Maybe people wanted him around for selfish reasons, but really it wasn't a big deal. He lived a short life but he was healthy.

In the end he had it better than probably more than 1 billion people in the world have it. He had a lot of food, lived in an unpolluted area, and was treated well by everyone. Nothing to get worked up about.

There are plenty of animals mistreated in zoos. Get worked up and comment on those. This Orca was free to do whatever he wanted and hung out with people. So what if they didn't capture him and move him a thousand miles down the coast? They aren't bad people. Get over it. In the end his life was at least 100x better than any orca in a zoo or theme park. He just had a short life.

I see you have spent all of one day as a member of IMDB. You might want to consider that when most people comment on something, yes, we've actually watched it
As a biologist and an animal lover, I have spent my life commenting against zoos. What was done in this film in the name of human emotionality was simply horrible.

You're an idiot. 9 out of 10 people in this movie would have had no problem returning him to his pod. Save your stupid blathering about the evils of mankind for the deliberate genocides that are happening everyday...TO HUMANS.
