that Joan is playing for laughs, and doesn't really believe half the things that come out of her mouth. Otherwise, there is absolutely no depth to this woman whatsoever.

I disagree. I think the show lets us see what an unfulfilled person she really is.

Unfulfilled in the sense that she is holding onto old grudges? That she blames everyone but herself for the things that have gone wrong in her life? That she is overly impressed with money, fame and material items, and the people who have them?

I'm really trying to understand here.

You are a very generous person. I have trouble seeing her that way, but you may be right.
