WTF....This is my idea!

Holy mother of God...I swear I am not lying. I had been toying with the thought of penning a treatment to this idea and just today morning started working on a rough treatment. I wanted to juxtapose aspects of a David Cronenberg film I saw which is similar in theme, Contact by Robert Zemeckis and the whole apocalypse theories and scenarios. It would be pretty cynical and bare and an asteroid does hit the planet as our band of sole survivors haplessly look on from a space shuttle.

Now I am angry. Just angry.

Carry on with it. Your idea sounds different enough and it's not as if 4:44 is the only film to ever deal with the end of the world.
Good luck with your project, it sounds like something I'd watch!

I have been on the IMDB boards for 5 or so years. Many of the posts that I have seen are either scarcastic or demeaning in some capacity. It was very refreshing to read fingert's response. That was one of the most encouraging I have read on IMDB.

Cool. Thank you so much for your response. I have in the past been guilty of only responding as you say sarcastically or demeaningly, but have since learned to behave more positively. All I ask is that you (forgive the cheesiness) "pay it forward".

I am the OP and I want to thank you personally. If one person would give another person's vision a chance, without being influenced by society and media, I'd truly be a happy man. Thank you.

I do believe the reply you left for me 3 hours ago was a simple "you suck......goodbye!"

Of your three message board contributions since 2007, there's this, that, and calling someone a 13-year-old boy as an insult.

Be the change you want to see in the world, you hypocritical sack of pathetic garbage.

David Cronenberg film? Do you mean "Last Night" (1998)? If so, that's a Don McKellar movie; Cronenberg was an actor in it. It was the first movie I thought of when I saw the listing for this new one.

As indicated by your own list of influences, it's typical for movies to be highly derivative. Your idea isn't original; neither is 4:44. Doesn't matter; very few films have an original premise. Just make the human story as good as you can and don't worry about that.

And, if you continue as a writer, you'll find this happening a lot. Happens to us all.

It's called zeitgeist in German. As if ideas float around in the air and sometimes (often!) are picked up by more than one person!!!!!

Of course, we share many of the same influences, societal and environmental, and sometimes our thoughts go in similar directions. But they are never quite the same, so, Write On. Share!

reply

Perhaps you should keep your inspirations to yourself so no one else uses the idea.

reply

"today morning"? Sic. It should be "this morning"

reply

The OP could be a German who literally translates the German phrase heute morgen to "today morning". Heute may be translated as "today" or "current". It is more idiomatically correct to say "this morning" in English.

I think he is Indian going solely by his username "rishi" which is Hindi meaning Saint. And it seems to be a literal translation from Hindi "aaj suberey" meaning "today morning" which is incorrect.

It really doesn't matter if the idea is repeated...it's how you execute it. This film is not the first of it's kind. I'm sure you could take a logline from a dozen other movies, and say they're for this one and you wouldn't be able to tell.

Write it.

Actually yours sounds better; at least an asteroid impact is a plausible way the human race could cease to be - very abruptly.

It could even be plausibly predicted to the minute (although not until it was quite close).

Unlike the notion in 4:44 that the atmosphere would be fine one minute, then deadly the next....

This is delightful. I read the brief synopsis of the movie and immediately thought to myself "here goes another one of your ideas down the drain!". I thought about writing a book where everybody just knew that the end of the world would come at the precise same instance for everybody, and I would explore the scenarios on seven different points of view. It seemed like a good idea, but not one that I would really flesh out in the next couple of years (I have many other "better" ideas in my queue) - it hurts when your idea gets picked up by somebody else first (I'm almost used to it), but when I read your post, I somehow felt relieved that I'm not alone here!
Better luck next time (for both of us), and keep the ideas moving!
