3D?

So what am I missing about this film's synopsis that makes it appropriate for 3D? Seems an incredibly random / pointless decision, in light of what's known about the film thus far...

I agree. Really weird but interesting choice for what sounds like a drama film. Maybe there'll be some surreal dream sequences?

To be fair Pina was one of the best uses of 3D I've ever seen and Wim seemed to love the format. It's also worth mentioning that Benoit Debie is the director of photography of the film, and he can pull off some stunning looking visuals in films where the plot don't really show much possibility for eye-candy (Irreversible, Carriers, Spring Breakers).

I don't think the analogy of color quite fits here. 3D can be a distraction whereas color tends to neither distract or attract. I agree that Wim understands cinematography enough that the incorporation of 3D will most likely be for the better.

3D can be a distraction if it's done wrong.

But 3D films use it now more and more sophisticated:
I saw the great-looking "Exodus" and it really didn't
took me out of the story anymore.

3D can be used in a very subtle way, but it still needs exploration.

'Why make it color? Is color necessary or appropriate? '

Why not A SILENT MOVIE! 🐣

Haha.

C'mon though, there is reason 3D TV failed. It's clunky and usually distracting. Not to mention the glasses. Normal TV is 3D enough!

I have just seen this in a theater. The 3D is very effective in a few Hitchcock/Vertigo zooms but otherwise a bit pointless. At times there were lingering shots of tree branches or the logo of a publisher on a glass door that seemed designed to remind people they are watching 3D.
