Seven Miracles That Saved America

If you liked this documentary, I highly recommend the book: "Seven Miracles That Saved America" by Chris and Ted Stewart. They cite compelling evidence that the hand of Providence has preserved the United States on multiple occasions. For example:

* The unlikely discovery of America by Christopher Columbus.

* How (and why) desperate English colonists were able to survive the "starving time" at Jamestown.

* The Battle of New York during the Revolutionary War.

* The miraculous creation of the United States Constitution.

* Abraham Lincoln's desperate prayer that turned the tide of the Civil War at Gettysburg.

* How a series of extraordinary events changed the Battle of Midway during World War II.

* The preservation of Ronald Reagan's life from an assassin's bullet, allowing him the time he needed to orchestrate the fall of Communism.

Never, during any of these critical junctures was a positive outcome likely. The book documents many, many behind-the-scenes miracles and seeming coincidences for each of the above points that turned things around at the last moment. Clearly the hand of Providence was behind the founding of America. I enjoyed the book and recommend it to everyone.

1) America was already populated by natives, and previously discovered by Vikings.

2)Only 61 of the 500 original colonists survived, and did so by aggressively attacking the neighboring Powhatan tribes for resources.

3) The British held NYC and its harbor until 1783. It was a loss.

4) There was nothing miraculous about the writing of the US Constitution; it was an almost decade-long process that drew inspiration from dozens of philosophers, political visionaries, economists, and free-thinkers.

5) The Battle of Vicksburg, and the Confederate loss of the Mississippi river was far more influential in changing the fortunes of the North than Gettysburg.

6) The breaking of the JN-25 code is pretty much the reason for the American Navy's success at Midway. Wasn't really extraordinary; you should be thanking IBM.

7) An untrained lunatic obsessed with a teenaged actress isn't exactly an "assassin." As it was, Reagan's injuries were sustained because the bullet ricocheted off the armored limo door that was meant to protect him.

You see the hand of Providence, historians see incidents of causality. Your argument, as well as that of the authors, is spurious at best.

There are only two ways to live your life.

One is as though nothing is a miracle.

The other is as though everything is a miracle.

A life of faith and light.

Or a life of doubt and darkness.

reply

There is nothing "dark" about doubt, skepticism, free inquiry and questioning EVERYTHING.

In fact it is quite the opposite. Faith is a mental prison; gullibility and a tool for control. It corrupts reason and morality. It is the greatest evil ever created.

* The miraculous creation of the United States Constitution.

Yes, it is indeed miraculous that after almost 1800 years of oppressive Christian nations ruling the West with an iron fist that such a wondrous SECULAR document authored by freethinking ENLIGHTENED Deists and agnostics could come into existence.
