So, that guy's arm...

How could it be so cold that a few minutes of exposure turned the father's arm brittle at the beginning of the film, and moderate enough for the passengers to conceivably survive outside the train by the end?

reply

They do mention the altitude from the place they are so some calcutions must have gone to it. Plus maybe they leave the arms exposed more time depending on the location.

reply

The speed of the train, and hence the windchill factor from the air rushing past the exposed arm, likely had a lot to do with it too.

The train looked to be going at least 60mph (probably more), so that would be one hell of a "wind".

Understanding is a three-edged sword.

reply

Ok, thanks for the responses.

I'm so glad you asked this.

I just got done watching the film myself, and while I enjoyed it... I was left with many, many questions. This being one of them. lol :P

reply

Ummm wouldn't that be absolute zero where the arm would freeze solid....that really wouldn't happen it's just a fraking movie.....watch it and enjoy...

reply

No. At absolute zero all atomic motion stops. If you put a piece of meat in the freezer out freezes solid. It's nowhere near absolute zero.

reply

Absolute zero, or zero degrees Calvin, is only theoretical and as far as we know does not and cannot exist in our universe. Heat is the movement of matter. At absolute zero matter stops moving and existing in the Standard Module of the universe. Some people think it would be something like suspended animation in science fiction. It has never been tested as we have no way of fully stopping the rotation of atoms and sub-atomic particles. Some work has been done in the field of super conductors for quantum computers where protons are separated, accelerated, and fired inline against a high energy laser counter-imposing the spin of the particle. This process can lower the particles spin, and thus it's temperature, to a low enough speed that the matter enters a super-conductive state, but never fully stops moving and reaching absolute zero.

Calvin = hilarious auto correct?

@bellboa - Took the words right outta my mouth. 😏

reply

Or maybe some areas are colder than others?

reply

The temperature might have been much colder because of the failed expirement that turns earth into ice. Did you noticed the corpse in the car at the start of the movie? It suggest that no life is sustainable on earth anymore that is why they have their own farm for fruits and vegetables and aquarium for fish inside the train.

reply

They said at the higher altitude it would freeze the arm solid
