Why?? (Spoilers)

I haven't read the book, and maybe if I do I will understand this...but why did the mother have to implicate her daughter? Weren't both girls suspected of the crime from the beginning? Also...

Do you think Alice figured out her mother gave the other girl the jack-in-the-box to put at the crime scene?

Do you think Alice's mother loved her daughter or hated her, or both?

Listen to the words in "Alice's" version of the story when the girls find the baby alone on the porch.. "the baby's mother doesn't want her" expressing that her own mother does not want Alice.

I did not read book (but I sure will now!). I just finished watching so I will give your ?s a shot.

Ultimately her mother was The Monster.
IMHO she was a narcissist who only wanted daughter that was a reflection of her-thin, fancy free with the rules and somewhat pretty.

She implicated her daughter to "make it even/fair" between the 2 girls. My opinion is that if she could have blamed her daughter and let Dakota's character walk scott free she would have.

Dakota's character told the cop that she put the Jack in the box at the crime scene, I don't think she would've known which one of them (Diane Lane or Dakota) did it but she did know someone set her up via the jack in the box. So she knew there was some sort of conspiracy going on.

Hard question. I am torn. It wasn't healthy either way. And sometimes in life we don't get these answers.
The curly girl being a stickler for rules may be a form of rebellion against her mothers lack of any structure rules.
Had her daughter been like Dakota I believe she still would have found some type of fault with her and found something else to screw her head to kingdom come with.

Her mother hovered over her from the beginning of the movie (asking about the job)and came across a bit too worrisome but loving an as it went along it turned pathological non?. In the movie her daughter mentions how she told her that her father was heavy and that more then likely came up in a conversation about her weight.

Anyway those are IMHO about the movie-I really thought it was a good movie I would love to know why I never heard of it before it was on Starz tonight.
These were really fleshed out good characters and a good movie that built up a lot of tension. I will recommend it.

When Helen read Alice's journal, Alice had written that her mother didn't like her because she looked like her father, he was fat like her. Also Helen was an artist and Ronnie was artistic too. So she related to Ronnie on that level.
I really like this movie too. Now I want to read the book so I can get more details on the characters.

"I cant undo what you've done... but I can make sure Alice doesnt go unpunished.. I can make it fair"

I must have missed that exchange between the mom and Ronnie (watching the movie at home, multi-tasking, etc.). Thanks for answering my question, even though it was kind of a snarky response...
