Eccentric or insane?

I love Errol Morris's films, but in this case, I can't help but to ask myself whether he and we, as an audience, are being amused by an eccentric's manipulative, preposterous lies or by someone's pathological disorder. The former seems fine, but I feel a bit guilty about the latter one.

Thats very interesting! I was wondering the same thing. While watching this, after a few minutes I could not help but think this woman had some serious mental problems.

I'm no expert on the subject, but I'm leaning toward pathological disorder.

As a result, I didn't like this film nearly as much as you (or apparently most voters on this site). This seems as authentic as a "reality" television show, with a sad attention-grabber saying and doing anything to remain in the spotlight. Regardless, I didn't find her or her stories interesting, and this was a chore to get through. If she sat next to me on a bus (and many like her have), I'd change seats. 4/10 stars from me.

If this woman were any more mentally unbalanced, this doc would be abuse. But, Morris allows and edits the film to contrast her narration with the facts of her history which is a counter-balance to the tale of the criminal activity in England. The 70s were an era of such excess and permissiveness from the 60s counter culture that the behavior of this woman, albeit self-indulgent and narcissistic, would not be so obvious for then the California fringe society which was her domaine. However, in conservative parts of the country and no doubt England, she was raving qwackers. Probably in today's society, she'd be on some reality show as a colorful aging cougar of yesterday's hippie culture.

Well, I just finished watching this on Netflix. And I'm now quite convinced that her 30 minutes of fame were up a long time ago; she should give someone else a chance now...

I think both. She's eccentric but also pathological because she did actually kidnap him, held him up in some house against his will, etc. If she didn't go that far, I'd leave it as just plain old eccentric, stuck in a childlike state and batty but in a harmless sort of way...
