The 5 states of Texas was spot on.
He broke down the cultures on the map perfectly. I knew right away the screenwriter had to be from Texas.

shareAgree. I especially loved the Panhandle analysis, having lived in Lubbock for 7 years. ? indeed. :)
"Well!!! Since when did you become the physical type?"
There are more oil and gas wells than people in the panhandle.
The coast around Port Arthur, etc is certainly toxic with the oil refineries and chemical manufacturing.
There was a proviso when Texas entered the Union that it could be divided into five states. At that time Texas took in half of New Mexico, the Oklahoma Panhandle and ran north into Colorado from New Mexico. Texas relinquished that land for several million dollars and used it to pay off the public debt of the Republic of Texas which existed for 10 years.
Despite right wing Texas politicians saying Texas should be divided to get more votes in Congress, the US governemt takes the tact that they lost that right by seceding from the Union in 1861 when they sided with the Confederacy and were readmitted after military occupation.
The northernmost boundary of the Texas Republic went about a quarter of the way up into Wyoming.
shareThis was one of my favorite parts of the movie! I grew up (and my parents still live) in the "Carcinogenic Coast" right next to Dow Chemical Plant, and all boy, is that "carcinogenic" label TRUE!
And now I'm going to school at the University of Texas in Austin, or in the "People's Republic of Texas" as I believe they called it, and it's a completely different ballgame.
The theater I saw it in (back home, on the coast) was roaring with laughter at the breakdown.
The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all.
They call me Kelsey. :)
Yeah I wondered how he would describe Austin. It's pretty liberal in comparison with the rest of TExas.
shareYes, but the People's Republic of Austin only extends pretty much to the edges of Travis County, with much of the rest of central Texas being regular conservative Hill Country.

Austin is an oasis in Texas as Norman is in Oklahoma and Lawrence in Kansas. The Christian Conservatives who occupy other areas of those and other states are scared to death of university towns because they introduce new (and threatening) ideas to young students, force them to think and to reevaluate the questionable values that they have been taught and indoctrinated.
shareGood to know re Norman, OK. I'm going to start digging into the Native American side of my family tree more deeply and it includes Oklahoma. I currently live in Texas but was born and raised in Kansas and went to the University of Kansas in Lawrence.
Getting anyone to think through anything these days is a rarity. I've lost hope for reasoning and thinking folk as a matter of course so I'm grateful for the pockets and enclaves of such.
"Daddy! He's killed Steve and he's jamming the door with him!"
I call Austin "Moscow-on-the-Colorado."
shareIt was definitely spot on =] The man who explained the five states of Texas said it in a very humorous way, too.

My husband and I were both laughing out loud at this. I was born in Dallas and have lived in the area most of my life (where's MY Mercedes?)with the exception of a year in the Panhandle (? is right) where he was born.
I have relatives in East Texas, and that's exactly the way they are. Bless their hearts.
Camera adds 10lbs;internet subtracts 50.
He was spot on except for that Tex-Mex has extended to cover the entire state & it's pretty much Mex-Tex now.
shareI believe it was 7 states. Regardless, I uploaded some screenshots from the scene here: http://imgur.com/gallery/nbUaQ.

Looks like five states, plus the Panhandle, which is uncertain territory.
shareI'm not from Texas, but have visited there, and that was my favorite part. Hilarious!
shareI agree. It was so funny.
shareI loved that part. Especially "The People's Republic of Austin"
