Jack Black, snubbed for BA Oscar

I've never been a fan of JB's films. I've thought he had exceptional potential, but was misused in a lot of films.

He finally hit his stride with 'Bernie'. Linklater got a fantastic performance out of Black, that should have won a Oscar for BA.

Haunting performance.

saw this last night. this movie was hilarious. lots of stuff about america. hidden facts. esp. about class. the old lady...she's so typical of lady who marries into money and somehow thinks this makes her 'better' and gives her the right to treat people like crap. it's a cliche in a way, but you rarely ever see it in movies.

This movie was so interesting, on so many levels. And YES, Jack Black really showed his versatility in this movie. Excellent casting, for sure.
Linklater did a great job.

Agreed. He was really terrific!

He was so good in this movie and so was Shirley McClain. Both should have gotten Oscar nods especially Jack Black. It was an amazing performance. He was nominated for a SAG and a Golden Globe I think.

You know very well the academy will not award a black.

@Splarne I gotta give it to ya... that was a good one!

I have to agree with the OP. JB was awesome in this film. He definitely should have been an Oscar contender!

His performance was nowhere near the level of that year's nominees.

I agree 100%. Never been a fan but he was really good and worthy of a nomination. I really liked this movie as I do most Linklater films....except for Bad News Bears remake. Horrible! God-Awful disaster. I liked Bernie more than Boyhood.

Hey chas437,

I completely agree with you. I too have always struggled with enjoying Jack Black as an actor. He is definitely a personality actor, having a very specific style that is his own. He does not vary from this personality throughout his movies. If Jack Black is apart of the film, often the film becomes centered around him and his personality and not much else. This movie, while still having hints of this, seemed to integrate his style well into the film. This was the perfect film for him to step outside of his normal personality acting and step into a difficult role. He played the character of Bernie in such a way that made us want to love his caring and sweet persona, but there was something off and haunting about him at the same time. Us having this reaction is so crucial to the point of the film, that we are all capable of evil. No matter how kind or caring, we can all be pushed to the brink. Black acted in a way that helped the audience grasp that concept.
