Hey chas437,
I completely agree with you. I too have always struggled with enjoying Jack Black as an actor. He is definitely a personality actor, having a very specific style that is his own. He does not vary from this personality throughout his movies. If Jack Black is apart of the film, often the film becomes centered around him and his personality and not much else. This movie, while still having hints of this, seemed to integrate his style well into the film. This was the perfect film for him to step outside of his normal personality acting and step into a difficult role. He played the character of Bernie in such a way that made us want to love his caring and sweet persona, but there was something off and haunting about him at the same time. Us having this reaction is so crucial to the point of the film, that we are all capable of evil. No matter how kind or caring, we can all be pushed to the brink. Black acted in a way that helped the audience grasp that concept.
