Does it have the 1920s feel?

Ala Gatsby style

reply

Well Gatsby was more larger than life and fantastical, with a bit of a different tone than this film. However, I do want some Roaring Twenties glamour!

reply

Yes, but not in a sensationalized way like Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby. It's a very good movie though.

reply

I agree--and I enjoyed it MUCH more than Luhrmann's overblown Great Gatsby

reply

No, it actually begins in 1929 just as the Depression begins. Thomas Wolfe died in 1938 so the film is more Depression-era and we see plenty of evidence of this fact.

The women's costumes are of the later 30s to the 40s, they even had shoulder pads!! British movies are usually more accurate. Also, the train station is not US in style, and the train might be too old for the period. The jazz music is not of the era, it was less abstractly improvised then than it was later. "Afton" was played in a swinging style, more characteristic of the time. Prohibition was still in effect but the speakeasy doesn't ring true. It's a lot of trouble for British filmmakers to really represent the US accurately in the past.
