Solution

Would it have solved the hacker issue if he just avoided wireless connection, turned his wireless modem off and connected his laptop by means a physical network cable?
Also: resetting the modem and reinstalling a firewall and password is always possible if you can connect to the modem directly, right? By doing so he could have stopped the hacker from accessing.
And I'm fully aware that the film tries to go deeper than the anekdote of a guy who gets hacked. But it's hard to look beyond that if the audience is preoccupied with questions like mine above.

Exactly. Connet via ethernet cable and be done with it. I'd have been able to overlook this glaring mistake had the movie had any point to make. Unfrotunately it had none.

Interesting premise, but it was a dissapointing film...

Lucky me I had the ethernet cable connected on my pc. My mother is the one using the wireless connection, but my passwords are very awkward so nobody steels internet from me (thought I sometimes have done it from neighbours or bussiness offices, when they haven't changed the generic password from their isp provider) I'm no hacker at all btw, I'm not interested in other peoples personal issues, and Ikm not that smart nor good with computers, but internet providers here in my country are thieves so I try to use free internet when I'm in need.

Please excuse my terrible redaction, english is not my native language.
