Penelope Garcia? Someone please explain.

I love Criminal Minds (original), but when they did the crossover show to introduce Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, I found the characters so unlikeable that I didn't bother watching the spin-off. I was clicking around imdb and noticed that Kirsten Vangsness is credited for a bunch of episodes for it also as Penelope Garcia. Can someone tell me what her role is or how they explain how she is involved? (I'm curious but not curious enough to try and watch the episodes to find out :).)

Her role is the exact same as it is on Criminal Minds. (Well, I suppose her involvement here was slightly less personal, perhaps.) She's the technical analyst. They call her when they need her to look stuff up, just like on the original. :)

So I guess she's not permanently detailed to the BAU? Any FBI unit can call on her when needed?

The original 'Criminal Minds' team and the 'Suspect Behaviour' team are both teams within the BAU. There are other teams doing the same job but we don't see them so as not to complicate the plots too much.
