Why didn't the break the glass in the Window Room?

Those windows didn't appear to be barred. They were high up yes, but hey its still an opening.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.

There is a scene where they try to get upstairs into that room, and the stairway has a dead end wall blocking them off. The building was alive and changing constantly.... basically black magic was used to put the building under a curse that traps anyone inside forever is they stay in there long enough during the night.

Wrong. They all were in the window room as the OP put it and they were screaming out the windows. They didn't want to jump so it was suggested they walk up to the roof and take the ladder down from there. There turned out to be no way to the roof though.

I thought they had tried to smash a widow but the chair (or whatever) just bounced off it.
I could be thinking of a completely different film, though!

They did smash windows but then it had bars on it, they did find open windows but it was to high to jump, they tried getting back to those windows later but the stair disappeared.

Technically they did find the exit door, but when they got it open it wasn't the exit anymore.

Even if they had gotten back to the room with the windows and climbed outside they might have found themselves right back into the building again as far as we know. For all we know, they ended up in another dimension the moment they stepped foot in the building and there was no "outside" anymore.
