Has anyone been to Tasmania?

I'm a mainlander who has been fly fishing in Tasmania several times.

The impression I have is that about half the island is still wild as depicted in the movie. I certainly feel like I am in rugged wilderness when I am out in "the bush" there. Especially the south west corner and the central plateau. Much of the east and north is farmland, but there's still plenty of wild country to be immersed in in Tasmania.




Paradise is exactly like where you are now, only much, much better.

I live in Launceston, Tasmania! The Central Plateau where the movie was shot is all conservation area, so most of it is uninhabited! :)

Tasmania is sparsely populated outside Hobart and a few other towns. The interior is pretty hard to access even today. I did the greatest backpack trip of my life along the southern coastline--had to be flown in to a tiny dirt airstrip to start because the last road in that direction had ended 60 or so miles behind us. The scenery was really diverse and spectacular.

Lived in Hobart (capital of Tasmania) for a few years and traveled all round Tasmania. Tasmania does look like that and is largely uninhibited.

There are many parks and areas without civilisation though the landscape can be varied.

I live in the province of Quebec, Canada and if you look on google earth, check what is north of Montreal.

It's almost 80% of all the province which is wild like in this movie. Some part of these lands were never touched by the feet of mankind.

Just telling you this in case you want to travel, it might be less far than Tasmania

My husband and I vacationed in Tasmania for a month. Most of that time we spent in the bush, either camping or in cabins. The wilderness level up around Cradle Mountain seems fairly tame, but when we hiked out of Strahan into the reserve in the South West areas it quickly felt as though we could have been the only people on the island. On the other hand, Hobart is a nice sized city with and old, colonial feel, and Launceston felt to me like a modern city. There is tremendous variation.

One other thing to consider is that Tasmania is often the butt of hillbilly stereotyping similar to the American South. However, there is a lot of culture and history to be experienced, including the MONA and the symphony.

Yes I have but it was back in 94. Quite a while back. My memory may be a bit fuzzy but I remember it being great. However I didn't go where Dofoe went.
