Probably never be answered but why was Wolfwood even in this?

Didn't he die in the series? I'm sure he died. Does this take place before Vash's showdown with Knives?

Yeah, he apparently died in the series, but in the movie he looked like he was on the brink of death when Gasback helped him, so maybe they were trying to show that he didn't really die, who knows...i'm a huge Wolfwood fan so happy he was in it :p

I was also wondering if this was supposed to take place after the events of the TV series but maybe it was supposed to go along with it.

He really died in the series. This movie shows another adventure of Vash and is friends before the deadly and final events that take place in the series.

I had such a hard time enjoying this movie for this exact question. Wolfwood dying was one of the most tragic cinematic events I can recall, so there's no way I'll accept that this is after the series. But since Vash already seems to know him and Meryl pretty well, there's a pretty narrow slice of time this could actually fit into the series. And I don't recall there being a whole lot of time from when we're introduced to Wolfwood, to when he dies that this could even fit in. I'd love to know the timeline.

It seems like a huge pile of fan service that I didn't really appreciate. Obviously Wolfwood is one of the coolest most popular characters, but this didn't even really seem like him. It's just like they had some bland generic placeholder with his outfit and gun just for the sake of it.

Fairly enjoyable other than that, but I would have preffered something more standalone as opposed to just an extra long episode.

Agreed, Wolfwood was dead, it kind of ruined half the movie trying to work it out, but then I let it slide. Yes, the movie could have been better, but it was great to see the Trigun world again and I would watch another series or movie in a heartbeat.

Much like the Cowboy Bebop film, this actually takes place before the ending of the original series. It's a side-story with the "original four" of the series (Vash, Millie, Meryl, and Wolfwood). You can tell it's earlier on in the series (or perhaps it's an adaptation of the manga series, it's hard to tell) since Meryl still has no romantic interest in Vash, but we see her come to realize she has feelings for him when she thinks he dies.

It's great to be back in the world of Trigun, even if it's just one last movie.

You can tell that it takes place before his showdown with Knives because he is wearing the red coat and using his traditional gun, both of with he left in the desert when he carried Knives back to town after their showdown.

Everyone who's saying he died are retarded. He didn't die, try reading the manga sometime

So here is the timeframe wrapped up for everyone: the beginning (20 years earlier) is 20 years before the start of the series!!! At this time, Meryl, Milly and Wolfwood are still youngsters and not on the scene. Then, 20 years later (when the main story of the film takes place), is the timeframe in the middle of the series, after everyone knows eachother and after Wolfwood and Vash part ways for the first time. (it's suggested that Wolfwood's bike has broken down yet another time and he is stranded in the desert, when he is found and saved by Gasback).

^That's a good assessment, somewhere between episodes 9 "Murder Machine" and 12 "Diablo" would make the most sense to me.

If it were past Diablo I feel the characters wouldn't behave the way they do. The tone strikes me as something more like "Quick Draw".
