Ending *Spoilers*

I loved the movie but it seemed the ending went maudlin for no reason. I don't understand why Granny and Lucky could not keep in touch. He knows where she lives, she can figure out where he is, they can keep in touch and she can even help with his education still. This whole "try not to miss me" stuff made them sound like doomed star-crossed lovers.

I felt similarly about the ending with Granny, but I concluded that now that Lucky had, to some degree, transformed Granny's view of black people and children--she let him touch her, they bonded to the extent that she sold off her jewelry to pay his school fees, and she became, despite her cultural, racial and ethnic affinities, a virtual (grand-)mother to him--he needed to connect with the person who was most closely linked to his late mother, the "weak" pseudo-father. Granny's life was now transformed, as was Lucky's, but they would always share this bond, and he would never forget her kindness. It was incredibly sad but very moving.

KIT? Not easy.
- At no point did I see anyone use a telephone, so that must not be feasible. E.g. they communicated twice using recorded cassettes that were hand delivered.
- There seemed to be considerable distance between the homes of Granny and the adopted father.

And if you mean her helping with his education financially, his adopted father had paid for his education once, so he is capable of doing so.
