Katie's bicycle from Alex

Went with my wife to see this movie. Thought it was okay, but being the cycling nut that I am, was glad to see some bicycle content in the film. Supposedly the bike was just some old thing he had "sitting in the shed", which he apparently fixed up for her to ride around town. But again, being the bike nut I am, I immediately noticed the bike was equipped with what appears to be a Brooks B17 leather saddle, which is a very fine, high quality leather saddle that retails for $100 or more. The average person probably wouldn't like it, as they are quite hard with no padding whatsoever. But those who do use them, swear by them.

Anyone else notice this and think it odd for something just sitting in a shed to have such an expensive piece on it?

I will admit that I was rather annoyed at first over the way that Erin treated Alex over the bike which was somewhat understandable because of her trust issues and dealing with the abusive relationship that she had with Kevin.

I think it was originally his wives bike. He probably wanted someone to use it again, since he spent so much money on it. Plus, I think he had Erin marked out as someone he wanted to date/court, so he wanted to give her something that was special to him. He probably knew exactly how much it was worth! He probably didn't want to sell it, because it had sentimental value, but maybe he didn't want it to go to waste either.

I'm not sure about the parts on the bicycle, but there were a few instances where Katie rode the bike to Alex's residence, and he ended up giving her a ride home. When they went to the beach Katie parked her bike at Alex's store, and at the end of the day Alex gave her a ride home in his Jeep.

I noticed that too, but in a little fishing village like that, its probably safe parked anywhere. Over here it would never be seen again

it looked to be an old style three speed, like a Sears model of which i have owned several.

the seat honestly looked at the wrong angle, all messed up in the shot i remember that showed it clearly.

but you know. i wouldnt be surprised if there was a backstory if there was an actual Brooks saddle - maybe someone bought it there in the early 1900s, and passed the saddle down generation through generation - bicycles come and go but you keep the saddle and transfer it to new bikes as the decades go by.

Brooks are known to last a long time and get sent for repair rather than trash and replace. So i would accept this idea as realistic.

Another bike nut here - I noticed that, it looked like a nice bike, not one that he'll just wanted to get rid of. But probably, as others said, he appreciated it and gave it to her as a special present.
