Lexi saying she didn't recognize... (SPOILERS)

When Katie's husband showed up and was talking to little Lexi, he showed her the picture of Katie, and Lexi claimed she didn't recognize the woman. Given the close relationship that Katie and Lexi had developed, I find it incredibly hard to believe that she didn't recognize her immediately...and yet they never went back to that. My question is, did they expand upon this in the book? Was it ever revealed that Lexi sensed the guy might be bad and withheld the information because of it? I guess it's not impossible--kids are smarter and more perceptive than we sometimes give them credit for--but to be that composed and quick-thinking at five or six years old? Ehhh, I still don't buy it. At the very least, you'd think she would have told her dad, "Hey, this scary guy just came up to me with a picture that looks like Katie."

That being said, I know this is a movie--and a Nicholas Sparks movie, no less--but many of his films have been known to have plot holes like this. It was an interesting idea and all, but I thought the whole storyline with the husband was poorly developed...they could have added more meat to it, instead of going for the vague "my husband is an alcoholic crazy man who is out to get me" angle. But that's a discussion for a different posting :) My main question is about the little girl.

I believe she knew but pretended she didn't cause she sense he was bad she didn't buy that he was a cop because he didn't have on a uniform however yes I wonder wh she didn't tell her dad

reply

Yeah, I guess I could accept that she sensed danger and played dumb, but the fact that they never went back to it just seemed like poor writing. Lexi truly loved Katie--that much was clear throughout the movie--and you'd think that if she sensed Katie might be in danger, she'd want to tell someone. They go to the trouble of demonstrating how smart and perceptive she is, but then she skips off to a Fourth of July party on her father's shoulders and just forgets about the whole thing? She had a few chances to alert both Katie and Alex--yet she didn't.

reply

She was lying for her. She sensed the guy was bad news and she loved Katie and was protecting her.

You incredulity about the plausibility of it all is just nit-picking. This isn't a plot hole and I wish people would stop misusing that term so much for simply something they find unanswered no matter how trivial or for plot developments or details they personally dislike.

Lexi denied she knew Katie because she instinctively knew the guy was either bad or was trying to take Katie away from Lexi and her family. I think the reason she never said anything to her dad was because she thought she'd handled it and that the guy believed her and would go away. She probably didn't think they were in any danger. She was just a child, remember, and couldn't reason like adults can.

reply

That makes sense! She is just a child, she forgot to mention it to her dad.

reply

The daughter is pretty dumb. Why didn't she mention it to her dad or to Katie after? She could've prevented their whole shop being burned down.

reply

After the encounter, the daughter did ask her dad something along the lines of "Do police officers always wear their uniforms?" If the dad had asked why she's wondering, it may have opened up a conversation about the encounter.

reply

I was thinking the same thing when watching that scene. I figured she probably just did it to protect Katie but then I thought it was weird that she didn't mention it to her dad.

This is my signature.

reply

I thought she was pretty good at lying on the spot, without batting an eye. She knew who she was, but sensed he was a bad guy, I guess.

Plus, she may have smelled the alcohol.

I was more bothered that a little girl was left completely alone in the store.

reply

I got that she was lying because she didn't trust that he was a cop and therefore bad news (that's what I assumed at least), but then how come she didn't say anything to her father or Katie? That's the part I didn't get.
Actually I think I just came up with an answer - when Alex said that cops don't wear uniforms when they're off duty, Lexi probably felt like she just lied to a cop and lying is bad so she didn't want to tell him that she lied.

reply

Of course she lied.
