Julianne Hough was a too young for the role ...

I mean come on, she is like a teenage girl. The charcter Katie should have been played by some one older in her 30's. She was more like the daugheter of Josh Duhamel. Rachel McAdams would have been a better choice.

Either this or the Alex charccter should have been played by some one younger like Zac Efron, JGL etc ...

19 year age difference is ridiculous ...

I completely agree! I just watched the movie for the second time & she just didn't fit the part for me. I read the book & loved it but I didn't like her in the role. It's funny, when I watched it the second time, I didn't even really like it, I guess when I saw it in theaters it didn't seem so boring but watching it at home was a total snooze hah.

Actually I thought both men were too old for her. She's 25 and they are what 16 yr age difference? That was the problem from the beginning. Otherwise, the movie was great!

you think a 25 year old woman is too young for a 41 year old man? What the *beep* drugs are you on???

I thought the same thing. Why would a teen/college-aged girl play the role? I get that many men find younger women attractive, but it would seem more likely that an experienced woman could replace their mother/wife. One would expect that she and Alex would've had more in common too. Instead, it always looked like she was the babysitter or nanny.

Also if her character had the inability to have children, the bringing of them together as a family would have been more poignant. Does anyone know if in the book she is older and wants children?

She looks like she is in her 30's to me. Must be all that tanning she had to do for her ballroom dancing stuff.

LOL, but she doesn't even look like teenager. She's was alright for the role.

Julianne Hough was properly portrayed correctly for this film. Her youth look is what made her role in the film perfect. To play a young woman surviving on her own from an abusive marriage and doesn't trust anyone, 25 is the correct age for the actress, since most abusers find control with younger, more naive, insecure women who they can prey on (between 18 and 25 years of age). From 25 to 30 though, women should be really mature and learn certain things around this time and that's when they can think better of themselves if they know their attackers are wrong and they need to get out, instead of letting these things happen over and over. As a young woman at this age, Julianne's look fits the bill.

Actually Josh Duhamel was maybe a little too old for his role. There's not a 19 year age difference. It's really 16 years, but your point is definitely well noted that other than what's on screen, there is a generation difference.
