I can't believe no one's talking about this

Peter, hope you're working your usual magic. Can't wait to see this.

oh yeah, it's the internet

reply

it's hard to talk about a film he hasn't made when many have yet to even see the last film he did

reply

I'm eager to see his new films, but I still haven't got around to watching Goltzius.

I suspect that Greenaway seems to be out of fashion some what nowadays in cinephile circles. His heyday was the 1990s - he seemed to disappear off the radar after The Pillow Book.

Still - what this and Nightwatching and Goltzius and the Pelican Company - hopefully, Peter will still churn out some interesting pieces of cinema.

reply

Greenaway is still making some interesting films, the problem is they are hard to find and almost no one hears about them unless you're specifically looking for new Peter Greenaway films. I'm not even sure Goltzius has been released in the US yet.

He was only in-fashion when he went mainstream in the 80s. Before then, he was doing these extraordinary Avant-Garde films, leading up to his magnum-opus The Falls (1980). After that, he hired famous actors, adapted the narrative of his films to be more 'audience-friendly', and made his films easier to understand. I'm guessing by the end of the 90s, he got bored and went back to Avant-Garde, however he is now using digital instead of film, and his DOP Sacha Vierny has passed away, so they do not feel the same as his earlier work. His work is generally declining in quality as he gets older. I guess he is now on post-post modernism, and it doesn't work, but it may be fantastic looking back from the future, where post-post modernism is cool.

He should have never left mainstream, but I still love his work. Even if he makes it in a way that I should hate it. I hope he doesn't kill himself when he turns 80 like he said he would.

reply

He just makes pretentious tripe, that nobody but The Guardian is interested in.......certainly hardly anyone goes to see his films.
Possibly, why no one's talking about this.

reply

I'd listen to Mungo Jerry 'In The Summertime' on infinite repeat locked inside a closet with both wrists tied before I'd listen to anything Mungo Duff has to say on matters regarding filmmakers.

"His work is generally declining in quality as he gets older."

Haven't seen the Tulse Luper Trilogy yet, have you... Seriously, try and keep up.

reply

It does sound awesome. Can't wait to see this.

reply

I did think that this was something of a return to form for Peter Greenaway. Though most of his recent films have been reasonably good.

reply

I've just seen it on Blu Ray. Hmmm, yeah, it's pretty good. Not in his top tier(like The Cook or Prospero's Books) - but some in the middle of his work. I suppose I liked the whole notion of the love story between Eisenstein and his guide in the film. His usual filmatic flushes were interesting - but perhaps weren't for me.
