On the issue of the cell phone, indeed there are accessibility apps available. There are programs that will read text out loud on a computer so blind people can participate in on-line discussion, do Google searches, and so on.
Also, it is possible that Leo has a special phone that has more touch sensors. That is, Leo can feel the face of the phone and find apps and so forth. For example, simple bumps on the screen. Text is the 3rd bump down on the right. The phone is the 2nd bump down on the right, and his music app is the 1st bump down on the left. You don't even really need a special phone, just a screen cover with bumps spaced equal to the icons.
So, he could text using a voice app, similar to the text reader. He know generally where the keyboard is, he puts his headphones in, and as he types, he hears G_A_B_R_I_E_L spoken.
I don't think these basic apps are that hard to find.
Also, you can send a text using a computer. I'm sure Leo has a computer even though we don't really see it.
