Okay, I understand that tenants used to put money in gas meters to get a boiler or fire going....but why doesn't Hester need to do this in the final scene?

We see her putting coins into the gas meter in the opening scene in order to get it going, but then at the fadeout, she's simply turned the gas on and the fire springs to life.

Each shilling bought a certain quantity of gas. Any not used would be available next time that the fire was lit. Just as you don't have to fill up with gasoline every time you want to use your car.
