I hope this means she will be an oscar contender as she really is a great actress.

Her performance is truly one of the best - if not the best - I've seen this year. Sadly, the film has been mostly ignored in favor of more Hollywood fare, so it's highly unlikely she can get an Oscar nom with competition like Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence, Marion Cotillard, Quvenzhané Wallis, Emmanuelle Riva, Naomi Watts, Keira Knightley, Helen Mirren, and so forth. But it would be an amazing thing if she somehow could sneak in there and surprise everyone!

Out of your list only Jessica Chastain was nominated for NYCFCC award. Jennifer Lawrence and Sally Field as well as Anne Hathaway were on it. In an article I read they were very good predictors of Oscar nominees and winners.

No need to be big Hollywood fare to win. Zero Dark Thirty is getting a lot of attention for Kathryn Bigelow.

Here's an article on the awards and their success at picking oscar winners and nominees

So I just saw this movie, partly in response to Weisz's surprise win, partly because I've always loved Rachel Weisz. Let me start with the good: it's always nice to see her do a movie where she can resort to her beautiful natural accent. And she does a nice job emoting in this movie.

Now the bad: the movie itself is kind of crappy. Not really bad, just mediocre, forgettable on almost every level. The period detail and music are nice, and the acting is fine. But the entire film is just too damn muted to register much. There is little dialogue and even less plot. I just don't see her getting nominated for this, which is a shame only because she deserves to be back in the race after so many years of weak projects.

The Best Actress field is so weak that it needs the star power and reliable acting ability of someone like Weisz, but still, that doesn't mean anything. Lawrence and Chastain are the locks, and I strongly suspect that Cotillard will be, too, once she scores nominations from the precursors. If Riva is as good as they say she is, and she gets some precursor recognition, then I think they'll have to include her. As for the fifth spot, I hope they don't waste it on Mirren or Knightley for their lesser work. Wallis is good in her movie, but I don't think she was old enough to have a full awareness of what was going on. Dakota Fanning in I Am Sam and Henry Thomas in E.T. were better and went ignored by the Academy. Dench and Streep will get Globe Comedy nods, but that's it. So I hope that Naomi Watts scores that fifth slot. She's really overdue and looks awesome in the trailer for The Impossible, so I don't know why everyone's ignoring it. Unlike The Deep Blue Sea, this film looks like it provides its star with enough meaty material to be nominated.

Sally Field seems to be a front runner for the best actress win. What is popular really isn't important in awards from the film critics and it may give Rachel some attention to Academy members.

I haven't seen this yet, but am looking forward to it when it is available here. Lincoln being my first choice though. I am not very good at picking Oscar winners but as I said the NYFCC have about a 40% success rate over the years so that isn't bad. Not every film is for everyone but critics look at different things than we do. She was judged on her acting ability and not the overall film so I am glad she was recognizes.

I will probably wait til after seeing it to voice an opinion of my own but I do like slower moving movies with deep emotion to them rather than the usual action blockbuster fare we get so much of these days.

Thanks for your reply; it was interesting.

She is one of the few actors that, if I see her name in the cast, I know it is worth watching.
