Heartbreaking watching William drive away...

:(

Powerful acting all around.

Yes, I did feel for him in this. He really loved Hester and you saw it in his face when he spoke to her and the heartbreak in his eyes when she told him it was over. I was also amazed by his restraint when Freddie was spouting drunken words at him. I had my hand over my mouth that whole scene when Freddie arrived.

I also want to believe that Freddie was such a little s*** but I didn't live in post-WWII London and the economic crapness (and relative lack of excitement) that came after that. They're very well-rounded characters, but all very flawed. I wondered if perhaps William had been less restrained when showing affection, that maybe she would have stayed (although then we'd be talking about a different character). Freddie's assessment of her outside the pub ("marries the first man who asks her and falls in love with the first man who gives her the eye") was harsh, but...kind of true.

Oh, now I have all these feels for this movie again :(

Yeah I know what u mean. This film had me in pieces. I have lived this kind of relationship before (without the suicide and infidelity) and so it gave me the most chills than any other movie. The scene outside the pub and the end scene were the hard ones to watch. The ending when Freddie is just about to leave and he has tears welled up in his eyes tore me up bad because that was exactly how I felt when I left my ex. It was like looking in a mirror, just he's a man.

That scene (and their whole relationship) resonated with me, too. It was as if it was the first time they had ever been honest about what the other one wanted out of the relationship (seems like neither really knew). I "followed" someone, away from comfort and everything I knew, who had nothing to offer but instability (to say the least). "Love" is all you need - yeah, no, it's not lol...it's never always a fairytale ending when you think it's going to be.

Exactly.

Well, no.
I think none of the protagonists are able to love someone in the proper way, using symbols / images instead of just owning each others. They all have causes for that. They live in a universe where one can't love love, just for the sake of it.
The scene in the office, with the wife seating just being like a beautifull trophy was very painfull to me.
And when William drives away, well, at last, that's someone wrong out of Ester's life.

I agree.....powerful acting , and this scene was heartbreaking.

I thought that was the most heartbreaking scene in the film. William turning away without a word after Hester puts on a cheerful face. She was being kinda cruel to him, kissing him and talking about a future without him. He just can't handle that emotion....

reply

Well if Hester did end up marrying Freddie she'd probably end up having another affair because Freddie would of just been a no good drunk not giving her the love she wanted back and she would of eventually found comfort and affection from another man.
