Based on the rules of this universe, i think it has to be a ready to consume product for it to be alive. Perhaps its a phenomenon exclusive to this store?

It means that many of the characters in this film will be dead from their own expiration dates sooner than later - the bread/pastry products, dairy products, vegetables, even the hot dogs will have a short life. Canned goods will last much longer and Chief Firewater could pretty much live forever if no one drinks of him.
