A question to all the fans...

How many of you actually care about Desmond and his story?

I ask this question because at times I see posts/replies like:

"I never cared much for the whole Animus and present day storyline. Desmond has only started to become slightly interesting to me by the end of this game, and seeing as he's had three games to develope, that is not very impressive." OR "This game isn't about Desmond, I don't really want to see an AC in modern times because it would take away the essence of AC.".

And at times I see this:

"I personally like the present-day/Desmond storyline." OR "I have to say I enjoy the Desmond story".

I'm interested in hearing your opinions because of the mixed reaction I've seen for Desmond and the present-day storyline.

Well im very much facinated by the AC story entirely.
I havent tried ACB yet as im a PC player. But ive preordered it.

Agree that even with Desmonds special skills it would be no match against a bullet or two. Only way i can see it is if the plot lets us know that he is too valuable to kill thus they would need to use melee weapons.. Ofcourse a teaser or tranq gun would be effecient and still not really give Desmond a chance.

You just really cant hide very well with a robe and shining armor with sword and hidden blade bracers in modern time New York..

Desmond's storyline is indeed interesting, but I am among the people who prefers the action taking place in more ancient times.

However, I am curious as to how the developers will solve Desmond's storyline when it comes to confront Abstergo once and for all in the modern era, I hope they can come up with something interesting about that in terms of gameplay, and storyline because it will be certainly difficult to incorporate Altair, Ezio, or whatever new Assasin they choose for the next game skills into the modern era.

I personally like Desmond's storyline and wish that his story really is worth going through 3 punishing endings like that.

I'm finding the whole Desmond side of the story to be interesting, though I only say that once finishing Brotherhood, was kinda the same with AC2 as you didnt do much with him until the halfway point.
Though what I think it is that interests me is the whole Apple situation and how it ties both Desmond/Altair's Stories as well as Desmond/Ezio's together.

Ok, so if they were gonna make a new AC game based entirely in modern times, would you buy it or not?

Sure I would. I love the gameplay of Assassin's Creed, no matter how crappy the story gets, I'll forever love the series. You know why I don't like Desmond's story? It's because he is a guy who gave up his own life to live a life of fantasy.I just don't see why on earth would a guy completely forsake from his life to save the world. Besides, the stuff with the gods is absurd.

"You know why I don't like Desmond's story? It's because he is a guy who gave up his own life to live a life of fantasy."

Sorry, I just kind of laughed because so many people do that with video games. Aren't we all doing this in Assassin's Creed? Giving up our lives (okay, short instances of our lives that could be spent doing many better more important things) to "live a life of fantasy"? The thought made me giggle.

As for why Desmond would give up his life to save the world:

It's already more or less established that Desmond has very little choice in the matter as of ACII.

His life as he knew it is now over and he'll never be able to just saunter away like it never happened. Astergo are after him now; since Astergo has its fingers in almost ALL the pies out there, that means POLICE, FBI, CIA, ARMY, NAVY, AIRFORCE, INTERPOL, MI5, SECRET SERVICE (and too many more I'm too tired to go on mentioning). He couldn't just leave it up to the remaining Assassins and walk away. There'd be nowhere for him to go, and he doesn't have the know how to evade it all without the help of Lucy, Rebecca and Shaun.

Lets not also forget what happens to Desmond if he IS caught by Astergo once again. The evidence of it was smeared all over Subject 16's walls...in blood. He would be driven to insanity and probably end up in the same condition. There were 15 OTHER subjects before subject 16. What happened to them? I doubt they were let free.

So the choice to Desmond would be stay with the Assassins, risk the bleeding effect, find the apple and possibly save the world and live to tell the tale, or try to escape only to be eventually picked up by Astergo, put into the Animus for the last time only to eventually be absorbed into it completely as was Subject 16 and the female who became the computer itself.

I'll put it this way.

When I first played AC1 in 2007 or 2008 (whenever it came out), I thought to myself and told friends:

"WTF is this Desmond stuff. I want to play a game set during the Crusades, not a sci-fi time travel thing. I want Kingdom of Heaven, not The Matrix."

In short: I really, really hated the Desmond stuff in AC1.

Then I played AC2. I thought:

"Huh, this is kind of interesting," when his reality starts to "bleed" and he can keep up with Kristen Bell when jumping around the warehouse. Then he starts to have visions of Altair. And then the ending where "Minerva" talks through Ezio to Desmond took my surprise. It was when I finally saw what Ubisoft is doing with this franchise and I went, "Well....that's interesting. But I still don't want a Desmond-centric game. I hope they do the French Revolution or Victorian England in the next game."

Then I played AC:B.

Now, I've changed my tune. Ubisoft has done a great job of developing audiences who signed onto this franchise for epic historical fictions into wanting to see a dramatic conclusion to the sci-fi, apocalyptic set-up these games have been building to. The scenes of "Juno" talking to Desmond were eerie and shocking. When Desmond stabbed Lucy (presumably to death) and is told he is facing the end of the world and only he can learn the truth of humanity's existence...I realized I'm more interested to see what happens to Desmond and how this 2012 storyline will play out as opposed to a new ancestor.

I still hope they explore other historical eras in the franchise. And, I'm sure Ubisoft will because this is their new gold mine. However, AC:B has positioned me, and other gamers I'm sure, into a position where I am more interested in seeing a conclusion to the Desmond storyline first before we go off on another historical fiction in the next game.

I want to know what happens next. I want to know what happens in 72 hrs time, what cataclysmic event will occur that is looming in the dark. All the memory parts are there to drive the scifi story forward. And damnit I am tired of cliffhangers. I'd buy a game set in Desmond's time.

I really enjoyed playing as Desmond at the latter end of AC:B. Saying this, I wouldn't want to play the FULL game as him. I enjoyed the tidbits of playing as him, but I really enjoyed Ezio's story (looking forward to continuing it in AC:R).

At the same time I really do want to find a conclusion to Desmond's story, and I do want more answers.

Oddly enough it almost killed Ezio too, at the beginning of AC:Brotherhood.

But an Assassin is supposed to remain annonymous, at least up to the point where they strike their target down and if they can get away, good, but most would probably either give their life to take down that one important target or do as modern assassins do and use ranged weapons themselves... ya know, like snipers - Heck, the Assassins already got vambraces with guns on them :-)

I'm interested to see where Desmond's story is going and, like others, I hope that when it finally concludes, it is really worth it. Obviously the final AC game they ever do ever, ever, ever will likely focus for a large part on playing Des, rather than an ancestor.
Also, like others, I'm not sure how his historical skills *will* be of much use unless it's more a first person sneaker like the old Thief series, or the old-fashioned martial abilities are extrapolated into a context more resembling the recent Bourne Identity films.

For now, I'm just enjoying the treks history!
