Can I be the first one to say, "Ew?"

Why any woman would kiss Thomas Durant is beyond me...I thought she was going to slap him, as if to bring him back to his senses, but, "ew."

reply

It's a woman's old trick of distracting/calming a man down with sex. In this only a kiss, but a promise of things to come.

reply

Yeah, and power is a heady aphrodisiac -- I get that -- but Durant is so...ew... (with apologies to Colm Meaney, who may well be a charming and delightful person...) 

Have you seen "The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain"? He plays the town rouge, "Morgan the Goat".

reply

No...not familiar with any of his other work...

reply

I always remember Colm Meany "Durant" in Far Away, with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. His character in that movie is almost the same as Durant.

reply

Same here, that character is forever fixed in my brain.

reply

Oh yeah? As for me, every time i see him, i can't help but remember his role in Con Air, a movie that i loved in my teens. In it, there's this quote of his that cracked me up as a kid, after Cusack says to him that his car (1967 Corvette) is beautiful, Meaney answers: "Sunsets are beautiful. Newborn babies are beautiful. This... this is fvcking spectacular!" I love him ever since.

Anyway, as lame as the movie was, that's the role i will always remember him for. I'll add that he was impeccable in HoW.

People who don't like their beliefs being laughed at shouldn't have such funny beliefs

reply

Whenever I see him in anything, I can't help but think of him as Miles O'Brien in Star Trek Next Gen and DS9.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.

reply

Yeah, Durant is ew. But Meaney is rather attractive IMO.

reply

I had the same thought!
And later, again, when Mei went for Cullen. He just came off how many days in the saddle? Must have been pretty ripe!

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.

reply

I doubt he brushed that morning either. A glass of scotch doesn't count as mouthwash.

reply

Yeah, but I'd seriously consider making an exception in his case... 

reply

At least she is closer to his age. The Lily Bell relationship made my stomach turn. BTW, Does anyone know why Dominique McElligott left Hell on Wheels?

reply

Not anymore...! 

In English culture of that time it was VERY common for young women to marry an older man with means to take care of her. Even high spirited women like Lilly would not have a second thought to something like that, she probably had seen a number of her peers back in England do it. It was a rare thing for the wealthy to marry simply for love, it was practically a duty to increase ones standing in society.

reply

But Lily did not want that. That's why she didn't return to England, because she didn't want the typical, boring life of an English aristocrat. She was not some poor person with no other choice. That's why it made no sense for her to be with Durant.

The only reason she stayed was because she wanted to help finish the railroad, to honor her late husband. But then she sleeps with his boss, not long after he died?? Not to mention that he was a married man? I mean, was Durant that irresistible that she just couldn't help herself? I just don't understand her reasoning for being with Durant.

Then later on, when Cullen returns, she says she was with Durant because Cullen left. Does that make any sense? Why not just sleep with every other rail worker then? Because comfort and wealth wasn't the reason for her being with Durant, otherwise she could've just went back to England. I don't think love was the reason she was with him. So what was her reasoning then? To make Cullen jealous?? Cus that's the only thing I could think of. Unless she was just a slut. Or into old people. Was she an insane person?

Durant is "ew" but then everyone in this show is "ew," lol! Seriously, they are all so dirty, unwashed, grimy clothes. It's GREAT for an authentic feel of the times, because that's probably exactly how people were. But it's a very "ew" watching experience. I wouldn't have them look any other way but still it's gross.

Seemed like Meaney was basing his performance on Trump...
