Enjoyed the film - SPOILERS

Just got back from seeing it and I thought it was a very interesting and exciting film. My only gripe is that I felt there were quite a lot of strands of the story that didn't really go anywhere - for example, the woman and the children. I mean, Younes seemed to really like Leila, but when she was executed, he didn't seem all that bothered. The children - at one point Younes asked the little girl what was wrong and she said "nothing" and that was that. I was intrigued as to why she seemed worried about being at the mosque.

And then there was the singer who turned out to be gay. I wondered, when Younes saw the young man coming out of his room, if he was shocked that Salim was gay or if he was jealous. I don't know, I suppose that was open to interpretation.

But anyway, I did enjoy the film very much and Tahar Rahim is such a charismatic leading man that I was always interested in where the story took him. It was also good to see Michael Lonsdale again. I remembered him from that brilliant film "Of Gods and Men".

I enjoyed the film and don't appreciate the criticisms levelled at it. In terms of focus everything rested with Younes and his POV. So, for example, the children and the woman known as Leila were not complete trajectories because his relationship with them was bitty and fragmented. The importance of Leila seemed to be to radicalise him and the importance of the children was that he became involved in the resistance movement both within Paris and the mosque by bringing them to the safety of the mosque.

And then there was the singer who turned out to be gay. I wondered, when Younes saw the young man coming out of his room, if he was shocked that Salim was gay or if he was jealous. I don't know, I suppose that was open to interpretation.
Good point. This was ambiguous and I'm glad that it was left open because it seems to me that the character of Younes might not himself know or understand his feelings towards Salim and that sighting.
Why problem make? When you no problem have, you don't want to make ...
