Finally saw the film... *spoilers*

What a bloody mess. Last year, when I first watched the BBC series, it was a monumental event for me, personally. I was nearly in tears at the end of the sixth and final episode.

So now, I rent the DVD of the film (my only option as an American), only to find it butchered beyond recognition. This is not merely the waxing of a pissy fanboy, there are some CRUCIAL scenes exhumed from the series that change the meaning and subtext of the entire story. For instance, Rob nearly betraying his wife in the 4th episode was removed. WHY?! That scene made the ending feel entirely different!

I really hope that IFC's ownership of the Trip in the US won't prevent BBC from releasing the full series here. If all I'm stuck with is this DVD, then I'm afraid I'm never going to be able to enjoy the full Trip experience again without piracy. For God's sakes, they could've at least given you the option of watching an "extended cut" version with all the dropped material without it being permanently relegated to the "special features".

I just saw the film on DVD, and I loved it, despite almost no familiarity with either actor (I'd seen them in In the Loop and Mirrormask respectively but didn't recognize either one). I think this cut has the right balance of humor and drama. Any time you shorten a great work, where every scene is worthwhile, you're going to end up with a butchered product in comparison to the original. But what matters is that this version can stand alone as an introduction.

It is, however, tremendous to hear that what was cut was not just more humor and impressions but mostly dramatic stuff. Let's hope the complete mini-series comes out on Blu-Ray soon with seamless branching for those who prefer to see the theatrical version.

Prepare your minds for a new scale of physical, scientific values, gentlemen.
