Flashback 180 degrees (spoilers)

In series 2, there was this scene where he is in a rower out in the middle of a lake. Several times this scene was played briefly in non sequitur, disconnected from the scene leading up to it and disconnected from the scene that followed it.

We learn in the end that the scene occurs at the end. So, why include several flashforwards of the same scene at inexplicable moments?
