I thought Sam was an ex Navy S.E.A.L.

I thought Sam Axe was an ex Navy S.E.A.L. but i didn't see any "Trident" on his chest above his ribbons? did they explain this plot hole?

reply

I wouldn't call a wardrobe oversight or inaccuracy a "plot hole".

I'd call it a USA original production.

Haha, very true

He did mention something about his uniform being borrowed, or incomplete. I don't think he carried dress whites with him to columbia. Also, often times covert agents will be given cover ideas (think Jack Ryan in Red October) that do not match their actual job, this could be the case here. Most likely though the reason is the same reason he was being escorted by MP's and not SP's, not Navy consultant on the shoot.

I forgive them, it was... groovy.

He mentioned multiple times he was given the blue camos because his boss wanted to dick him.

I think kelvaris is right in regards to Sam not packing his Dress Whites. He didn't pack anything. In the scene at the Admiral's office he tells him he is going to Columbia right away, Sam starts saying how he needs to pack and the guy just cuts him off and asks if he's refusing orders. Sam didn't even get to pack his own fatigues, much less a dress uniform. So I think it's safe to assume the Navy Whites were borrowed.

But it is also likely that they weren't paying all that much attention to small details. It's a Bruce Campbell T.V. movie, not Saving Private Ryan. Honestly I can't believe how many people are nitpicking the uniform issue. The majority of people in the U.S. aren't either currently serving in the Navy or ex-Navy, and aren't going to be examining the uniform for realism. To be honest I didn't pay any attention to it at all, all I noticed about it was that it was white. They could have had him wearing a Royal Canadian Air Force uniform and it wouldn't have bothered me.

isn't Columbia a college?

reply

Bingo, we have a winner!

Please people - it is a made for cable movie filmed to exploit a popular character.

I am so tired of people nitpicking uniforns and every little military detail. I don't care. If many of you who are using the pause feature on your remote to watch films would just put the remote aside and watch the blasted movie for the story or the characters you would know the whys of these ridiculous rants. Even if it is not explained or it is an over site by the costume folks - who really cares and what difference does it make? Are they going to rip it off the air, run out and reshoot the offending scenes because some loon on a message board got his shorts in a knot because the uniforms weren't up to code?

Stepping off my soapbox now, next?

Do we even need to mention that Sam's hair was WAY too long for military regulations and that he was walking around outside without cover (military cap) most of the time?

I was checking out the ribbons in his fruit salad and either he or the owner of the uniform appears to have been awarded the Order of the Star of Romania, which has rarely been awarded to any US military and hardly ever since the end of WWII.

He also appears to have gotten the Military Order of the Cross of the Eagle, an Estonian decoration usually given only to very high-ranking US officers.

I can't find the others. Anyone else recognize any of them?

Oh, and I am not doing this to nitpick. I just want to see if the producers slipped any in-jokes into Sam's military decorations, like a NASA Spaceflight Medal (given only to astronauts who have flown, and, no, they didn't).

It looks like most of the ribbons are from various cadet programs.

- Civil Air Patrol (Senior) Yaeger Achievement Ribbon
- Army JROTC Summer Camp Ribbon
- Army JROTC Color Guard Ribbon
- Law Enforcement Explorer Emergency Preparedness Ribbon (upside down)
- Civil Air Patrol (Cadet) Lindbergh Achievement Ribbon

Nice job FourKing . . . and thank you for the info!

I've noticed in general on all the IMDb message boards that people who don't find errors tend to overreact to those who do errors and want to discuss them.

Unfortunately for some us, we NOTICE DETAILS. Whereas others just take in the overall impression.

Fortunately for the second type of person, the first type is often hired as designers (costume, props, sets, choreography) so that there is enough verisimilitude for the 2nds to enjoy their shows.

Oh, I watched a thing on Youtube about the SEAL badge and whoever it was said that the design of the badge is copyrighted and they couldn't use it without permission, which I thought was odd, because it was my understanding that any work of the US government (photos, literature, etc.) was automatically in the public domain. Anybody know about this?

^^This is the answer.

There is a commentary track on the DVD with Jeffrey Donovan, Bruce and Matt Nix and Jeffrey addresses this and said that it's not as if they didn't know they were getting it wrong but that it's a copyright issue.

I lost count of the goofs in his movie, how can it be rated so high? No "Budweiser" badge on any of his uniforms but "Twin Dolphins" Submarine Badge.Maybe they're carring the tongue in cheek too far !!!!
