What kind of democracy is this?

How is it that Tate (more of a mayor than a president), can just appoint a person to the governing council, not to fill a temporary opening, and no one objects? For a bunch of rugged pioneers, this bunch are quite the passive sheep.

And how come Jack isn't answerable to him?

Can't he relieve Jack of his command or something?

They didn't seem to have any control over Mitchell either. They thought he was planning a rebellion and their best strategy was to have his wife spy on him. Jack's not married, so they are completely stumped as to how to deal with him.

reply

Apparently these folks don't care to much for American or British concepts of balance of powers as there seems to be no judiciary, no lawyers, and the governing council is something that exists in name only so far. Why is the faux Josie questioned by both the chief of police & the "president"? Aren't there any detectives on their police force? Why doesn't she get a lawyer? Why does the chief of police get to make medical decisions for conscious, adults?

Nothing new there then.
The British have allowed their hard-won freedoms to be slaughtered on the altar of suspect ideology for over 15 years and even re-elected the guy who held the knife TWICE.
The future will be just more of the same.

The fault, dear Brutus, lies not in our stars but within ourselves.

Because it ISNT a democracy?
Its not clear just how big a population we are talking about though a couple of hundred seems to me to be a reasonable guess.
So the social structure is likely not all that complex.

Please remember President Tate is both a planetary overlord and a village elder all in one. Its hard to be all presidential when your planetary population runs into the hundreds.

I dont find the character or his role unconvincing.

reply

Also, whenever anything sinister happens, Tate says 'keep it to yourself'. Not one for open communications then!

Its that man again!!

reply

I`m becoming increasingly convinced that this is because Tate and perhaps a lot of the other colonists just don`t want to know what is actually going on.
They have created this "little Earth" inside the Forthaven perimiter and just refuse to deal with anything strange or unusual from outside!

Either that or they know EXACTLY what is going on and that if it gets out, they're going to be the ones in the deep doo-doo. Unfortunately, this may be a little too sophisticated for the scriptwriters.

There are thousands of colonists. The only thing I can't remember and it's a big difference, is whether it is 5,000 or 50,000. I don't remember the episode or scene when they said it because it was just another scene where they were reciting random facts.

There is absolutely no way they could fit 50,000 colonists inside Forthaven unless its standing room only and I think even 5000 would be pushing things somewhat.
Also, the starships just don`t look big enough to carry more than about a couple of hundred people, plus equipment plus livestock (including the AC`s?) as frozen embryo`s and all the other gear they would need.

Just watched the show from beginning to end. I believe they said it was 17,000 colonists.

reply

Its 70000 colonists and the city is rather big just by looking at all the containers used as the perimeter and some housing units. They have shown the city around the last landing ship which is the command center.

And if you look at say microsoft you have the CEO who has a number of presidents who run the different divisions. The CEO is appointed by the board who has a chairman who appoints the CEO who appoints the president. The president is usually not elected by the people, he is elected by the council who are elected by the people. The board also has no say in the daily running of the country who are given tasks by the CEO to the president to run the routines. The council has the power to remove the CEO and is elected by the people or shareholders who are supposed to look out for the interests of the people, and would be also considered the judiciary. As we can see, in no case do the average person has any say in how anything is run. If who they elected does not perform it is the job of the council or judiciary to make sure its not done against the people. Who basically never do their jobs and who are there just get a paycheck. And if you gather enough power you can appoint a council member or judge etc who wields more power to do what is good for the people. So a country or company are all basically run the same way. For a company the aim is to make it a bigger company and for a country the aim is to make a bigger government.

reply

They seemed to be ruled by some mysterious council. They want us to be content with that. I suppose Julius Berger could have helped more with that, but we didn't get much insight into how he made his way to a power position in Forthaven.
