Need to play DS1?

Do I need to play Dead Space 1 to understand whats going on in this game? I ask because Dead Space 1 is currently stuck in my broken PS3, and I really want to play this one.

In terms of the story you might want to know what has happened as it would improve the overall experience. If you don't mind reading about DS1 rather than playing, then you can visit the deadspace wikia pages for a summary of the events of the first game.

But as for playing DS2 as the first game it won't be an issue. There's a range of difficulty settings and the same tutorial on controls and how to kill things at the beginning of the game, tho as a very quick pointer, learn which button is run as you will need it for the first minute ;)

Yeah, thats really what I'm worried about missing, the events of the first game. Its one thing to read about them, but its way better to see it for yourself.

dude i would play dead space 1 FOR SURE BEFORE playing the second just because of one particular part of the game in DS2 that will not forever scar youre soul if you havent played ds1

reply

^This. There is one noteworthy chapter in DS2 that will mean so much more if you've played the first game before.

reply

Need to play DS1? No, not really, the whole story gets explained in Dead Space 2. But should you play DS1? Absolutely! Otherwise you'd miss out on a great game.

I got the disc out and am now playing it! I am glad I did it, it is a fantastic game.

damn right. In terms of script and pacing, the first is absolutely the better game. The second one feels like a string of really cool setpieces that never quite came together as a whole game. The first one just *feels* like a cohesive whole. Better thought out, in my opinion. More... EPIC.

Well there is a 'previously on Dead Space' at the main menu.
