This game *beep* ROCKS. Recommendations?

I'll say straight away that despite having an Xbox for several years this is the first horror game I've ever played. I've always tended to get frightened by the scaryish moments in non-horror games like Mass Effect 2 and Rage. And the enemies in games that dont take cover and run straight for you (like the psychos and skags in Borderlands) tend to freak me out and stop my thumbs working properly. So I'd never played a full-on horror game, reasoning that I just wouldnt be able to handle it.

However I bought this game and started it with trepidation but soon came to absolutely love it. It's one of the best looking games I've played, the design work and details are first class, (the details on the suits are particularly nice) and the sound mix is fantastically effective.

So given that I seem to have overcome my horror game fear what other recent scary/gory/violent games would you recommend?

Well, Dead Space 1 for starters. Beyond that: every Silent Hill game ever made. I played the first one when I was thirteen and nearly shat myself... to death. They've only gotten scarier since then.

Any of the original Resident Evil games are a must play:
Resident Evil or the GameCube remake (which is the best version)
RE2
RE3: Nemesis
RE Code: Veronica
RE 0

Those RE games are classics and definitely have a great atmosphere and a great sense of dread (though some of them are dated mind you).

Another recommendation from the current generation is Alan Wake. Now it isn't a violent/gory game, but that doesn't matter because it's still a great horror game. It's inspired heavily by Stephen King stories and the 1990's TV series Twin Peaks. It's about a mystery writer with writers block who takes a vacation in an isolated town with his wife, but soon discovers that a sinister force exists in the town and that one of his stories (that he doesn't remember writing) is coming to life.

That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons even death may die.

Depending on what gamign platofrm you have access to:

Resident Evil 4
Dead Space
F.E.A.R.

Amnesia: A Dark Descent ~(PC, but you don't need a gaming spc machine to run it)
Slender (same, even easier to run)

Fatal Frame IV (wii)

I like Resident Evil 5, too. It has some brilliant comic-book horror moments, and is the most Wesker centric of all the games aside from the first. I really enjoyed it, it's especisally good if you can find a friend to play through with.

Aside from those:

Metal Gear Solid has some very effective horror style moments.
Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, Resident Evil Cover Veronica... all amazing games.

You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, Darling!
