It's a mental thing. I've known people who have literally gone insane when going a month without sex.
I think it's peer pressure.
In reality the act of sexual intercourse is not special at all, you know what is special? Musical talent, and rock climbing :).

going insane without sex for a month is not due to peer pressure.. that's a physical dependence.. The same way people get addicted to cigarettes or Chap-Stick

Huge numbers of people really are like this. Then again, huge numbers of people also AREN'T like this.
Remember, it's a sex-comedy about generic American male teenagers produced by Hollywood - you're not going to see representations of all human life, or anything particularly interesting or original for that matter.
