Pedophilia is funny.

Final episode, season 2.

Really?

Really?

The pedo scenes were pretty funny, and showed the pervs in less than a good light. There's is nothing that you can never joke about, it all depends what the joke is and how it's done.

I don't recall there being any mention of this in the final episode of S2.

No offense, but I don't even want to think about what kind of mind finds humor in the molestation of children.

reply

I don't recall any children being molested in the series. It was done in a way that the protagonist didn't even realize who they were or what was happening when he was in the snake pit of pedos.

The show also cleverly had fun with animal death and mutilation, nuclear holocaust, plague, bombings, terrorism, poisoning, necrophilia, dictatorships, child neglect, death by erotic asphyxiation etc. etc. etc. all played well humor wise.

As I said, you should be able to joke about anything, as long as it's well constructed and done as a joke with no harm intended.

If you watched the entire series, then one would have to wonder, no offense, what kind of person would watch something with all these other horrors depicted and only take issue with one small part....

The difference is this: the other things were way out there, far removed from reality. The writers made them silly, thus making them humorous. If humor is tragedy plus time, as they say, it's also tragedy plus distance. The farther out something is from its original iteration, the funnier it can be.

I didn't laugh at the dead cat at first, for instance, but then they kept piling on, adding to it and removing it further from reality. The gag became much more than just a dead cat, which, in and of itself, isn't all that funny. But it also revealed Todd Margaret's mindset, which was funny too. Again, more than a dead cat.

Nuclear holocaust, dictatorships, poisonings, necrophilia - these things are all really out there, too, or at least the show presented them that way, thus rendering them fair game.

Now, let's consider the pedophilia bit. There's a guy in a prison cell - a convicted pedophile - masturbating while he's having Todd describe what he looked like as a young boy.

Jesus. Honestly, Cobram, did you find that funny? Really?

You see, the distance was missing. That was too close to reality to be funny. Now, in the writers' defense, it might well be that you can't get far enough away from pedophilia to make it funny. I don't know. I'll allow that it's possible, but these guys sure didn't get there. And if you can't get there, it's probably best to just leave it alone.

reply

I see your point, but the pedo scene(s) also spoke more to Todd's mindset the same way you pointed out that it did to make the cat sequence of events work comically.

Todd's callowness was the focus of those scenes, and his characters incapacity to interpret reality did have it's humorous side.

We'll just agree to disagree. The absurdity of the scene is something that English comedy does well and often with touchy subjects (no pun intended.)

That's the best kind of funny!

reply

Yeah. Nuclear Weapons and dictatorships are so out there.

In the Middle East. Where people live under the constant threat of annihilation with far more problems than your cushy, western, armchair sweat-inducing dream life. Or in Japan, where the effects of millions dying of cancer are still felt and whole families being vaporized from history by a bomb.

How selfish of you to take offense at something just because it hit close to your jammy bottoms. You latent or what?

reply

EVERY subject is ripe for comedy. Just because a joke is made about a certain subject does not mean that the person/show/movie etc. is endorsing said subject. Late comedian, Patrice O'neal, would use the phrase 'good is good if it's good for me.' In the context of comedy he meant everyone is ok with a subject until it hits too close to home. Whether it's race, pedophilia, sexual orientation, mental health, death, gender, domestic violence, child abuse, sex, marriage, animal abuse, etc. there is always a chance for someone to be offended. Some jokes may be in poor taste, but they all should have the right to be made. Honestly, pc culture is ruining comedy and society.

They weren't making a joke at the expense of molested children. The joke centered around Todd's naïveté and him being oblivious. It was funny; lighten up.

Just watched the episode now that all three seasons dropped on Netflix. Yep, it was pretty funny. You're just a twat.

reply

Name calling. Nice.

Well I guess that's about what I'd expect from someone who finds pedophilia funny.

Thanks for commenting.

My favorite part is that he's trying to take the high road. All one has to do is scroll up and see the guy hasn't taken the high road the entire thread so why start now?

reply

I haven't seen this show before but you make me really want to.

Oh we are being trolled. Got it.

We live in the post Cards Against Humanity world. Most of us can laugh at it. If it were glorifying it, that would be different. Why is this any different than making jokes about murder or torture?

reply

Humour has to be removed from reality? Dude, try and grow up/harden up a bit before watching the big people television programs. Satire is an entire genre of comedy that aims to hit so close to home it shames people in to changing their ways.
Ever heard the phrase "it's funny because it's true"? It's funny, because that is true.
Everything should be joked about and jokes should be judged only on if they're funny. Not judged on whether fragile minds felt it was little too close to home.
At this point though, you're starting to come across as the kind of person that would say "I know a person who was molested as a child and they feel..." like it's some kind of badge of honour. And people like that are far more sick than any joke about paedophiles could ever be.
