WTF!

It was deliberately done like that and not unusual. British comedies have been leaving the last episode open-ended for years. A little ploy that is done by the series producers to encourage the network, in this case ABC TV, to commission a second series from the producers. Also, the funding is by state- owned enterprises such as Film Victoria and Screen Australia in the hope they will pick up the cheque for a 2nd series. If the series had been produced in house at the ABC, the last episode would most likely have a more defining series finale.
