Mid flight? This might have been answered before seeing how old the episode is but how was Zaheer able to carry Korra while flying? Zaheer may be weightless but Korra wouldn't be for obvious reasons so wouldn't she be dragging him down.
shareThat is kind of strange considering when Korra waterbended some ice onto on of Zaheer's feet he started plummeting to the ground. And Korra is a pretty beefy girl. She weighs way more than that block of ice did.
shareI believe flight is just a new ability of his, like lightning, lavabending, bloodbending, healing, and metalbending. He can carry Korra while flying just as well as he can carry Korra while walking.

I think it was more about concentration than weight having his foot suddenly encased in ice was enough to throw his concentration which caused him to lose altitude.
