The second most real survival show.

Ofcourse Survivorman is the best and most realistic there has ever been but I think this comes in second. It's so real that his wife almost died the other day and they had to actually bring in paramedics to save her. I don't care what other people say about dual survival, some of that IS staged. Anyway the whole idea of this show is great. A man that knows how to survive has totrach and keep his wife alive, awesome. She's not some gungho power trip Angelina Jolee superhero, just a normal girl scared of spiders and sweat. They make fires with sticks, that's it. Not some silly flint or battery or some crap they brought along because no one in their right mind would have a freaking flint rock with them to make fires anyway unless they were planning to use it. They also don't eat huge meals everyday like all these other guys similar to Les Stroud and he was real. Though I respect Bear for jumping in freezing water, Cody and Bill for knowing so much about survival and nature, I am pretty sure that most of the time they're out there without the camera's rolling, it's uneventful.

I agree with your point. Of course this show isn't as dramatic as Bear's because they aren't risk-takers like he is. Mike is there with his wife and even if he could "chimney" up the side of mountain like Bear does, it would be fool-hardy for his wife to attempt it.
Bear does stuff for dramatic purposes that will look good on TV that people in real scenarios would probably never want or have to do.

Bill of Dual Survival is a little bit more of a risk-taker and they also usually start off w/ some good basics. A couple episodes ago they even had a bow!

We are just seeing the highlights for sure!

"Supernatural" is filmed before a live studio audience.

reply

If it was real there wouldn't be paramedics 5 feet away at all times.

reply

Did anyone say it was completely real? I believe the title is secong MOST real. Most doesn't mean completely.

reply

Yes, because letting hosts die for the sake of a tv show is better because it's more real. You how stupid that sounds you jackass?

Everyone (including Les Stroud) has/had a base-camp and an emergency helicopter in case of severe problems. Every show for extremely obvious reasons need that sort of thing.

As far as realism goes, I like it because they stay hunkered down and gather everything they need (as opposed to MVW and DS where they simply run like madman for 3 days). I also like it because the wife is dumber than a sack of rocks and it simulated what ordinary people would be like in the wild. Which makes it feel more real.

reply

Huh? And you are calling me a jackass for????

reply

Most people would resemble his wife when in similar situations. We wouldnt have a clue how to catch food, light fire or build a simple shelter. We'd be doomed, only a few would be lucky enough to survive.

I agree nobody would be carrying around a flint(lighter maybe) and thats the one criticism I have about Bear,he should lite fire from nothing not cheat with a flint.

That isn't quite true. Many of us who do venture out into the woods carry a few items "just in case." Even on a day hike I carry my Leatherman tool, a flint (even though I always have a lighter,) a flashlight, and a compass. That's in addition to my canteen and snack food. But it IS a fact that too many go out totally unprepared; its my opinion that those people should have stayed on the pavement.

reply

@rickathedj, I agree. I always have a lighter, along with a small Leatherman, in my purse. And I keep a survival kit (water, flint, candle, metal cups, snacks, gloves, etc.) in the car at all times. One never knows when, or where, one's car might decide to just stop working.

reply

At least they are up front about it. There is a disclaimer at the beginning of the show that some situations are staged, and help is standing by in case there is a safety issue.

reply

Agreed.

reply

Part of the reason they have a crew there to help is for insurance reasons. The networks won't let them go out there in life-threatening situations without it.

reply

the most recent alaska episode really illustrated this. they would have been dead without their support team. in three days all they had to eat was bark.

reply

Yeah I know. I have never heard anyone else talk about headaches from dehydration, or seen them have to throw in the towel when they were dying. They go in and show how real it actually is. Survival is basically trying to last a few days until you're found or find rescue. Some of those places are impossible for a helpless human.Although now I am following Les Stroud and his new show, wow it's really a great and inspirational show. Actually the History Channel should be showing it instead of that abomination called "Swamp People", man that show pisses me off!

"God bless the good for putting up with all the bad."

reply

thanks, my man, e work hard, suffer much and much never makes the show, survival flat sucks and is hard work, anyone saying different is selling something. my missus is bad ass and rocks and i am proud of her. and for the folks who don't get it, i will say this, making a show about survival is actually harder than just surviving! hooyah!

reply

Wow, thanks for the reply!
I actually watched your new show tonight, "one man army". I was impressed. It was like fear factor for tough guys. I really like the mental aspect of it. I did a spell in the NAVY and I had a few tough friends who wanted to be SEALs, but man that cold water is one bad muther. I recently saw a film called "the fog of war" you should check out. Also films like Restrepo, Armadillo, Body of War. You can see them all here for free: http://www.documentarywire.com/category/military-and-war
Very good and valuable site especially if you like documentaries. Thanks for everything, and I mean that.

P.S. Were you one of the guys who would fly down and pick up those button pushers on that show called "out of the wild: the Alaska Experiment 2"??? lol

haha! yeah, i normally don't have time on line, but sometimes, i have business to tend and if i see a particularly honorable comment, i will try to thank them and if is see a very dishonorable comment, i will address it directly. too many hide behind screens and words without one whisper of their own merits to vet, usually because they have none. opinions are fine, we all have them and that makes the country great, that we can express them. so, that's it, and that's all, you said honorable things reflecting your character. salute for that.

as for the show, yeah, that was me, haha!
as for fear factor, not really, these are legit tests
that aren't about being brave enough to do them
as much as being able to master relevant skills on the fly, under duress.

alrighty, thanks for the movie list and your service.

reply

Yeah I hear ya. I was on here and posted a comment about the film "crimson tide" and got into a neverending debate with a submariner. It was fun but who has time for internet headaches. Really great film also by the way, right up there with Das Boot and the hunt for red october.

Here's a good list of survival films for you that I highly recommend:
-127 hours
-southern comfort
-into the wild
-rescue dawn
-behind enemy lines
-the mosquito coast

Alright, I'm done bothering you.

You should look at the work of Ray mears. No stranded and must survive reality tv stuff, he demonstrates techniques and interviews tribesmen and other natives about the techniques they use. He is my favourite by far and was the person who inspired me to enjoy nature. He has spent time by himself and no camera crew living in the wild and living with different tribes. This wasn't to make a tv programme either, it was just because he enjoys it.
