"Stalked" by a Grizzly...? wut?

As the plot explains, a grizzly bear is stalking the guys. That one word makes me wonder. Don't bears just snoop camp sites? Or protect their area of the woods maybe? Don't they just attack on site if provoked or if you're too close?

I can't for the life of me imagine a bear of any kind 'stalking' human beings like a shark or something. Perhaps I'm reading too much into the plot and that one word is just something my thick head is having trouble wrapping around.

So do bears actually take the time to stalk (as in, slowly and relentlessly close in)their prey?

EDIT: Also, how the hell do you not notice or hear a 700 pound bear plowing (excuse me, STALKING) through the woods and let it sneak up on you... lol wut?

Sharks stalk? But bears dont? I'm pretty sure once a bear gets a whiff if you, youre done for. If he can xmell you he knows where you are.
Now, as for stalking sharks. What the. .... I think youve seen to many of the Jaws sequels.

OP, let me enlighten you. A bear is an apex predator. It does whatever the hell it wants, and it's highly intelligent. If a bear doesn't want to be found, it can hide itself quite easily. Also, yes, you'd better believe any apex predator can, and will stalk whom ever, or whatever it pleases....so if you're in the wild, and you see one, kiss your ass goodbye.

It's not like a wolf, which is known for stalking prey. Sharks do not stalk per se, but they do historically zero in on repetitive sounds much like a bear might on a smell. Stalking is probably the wrong word for the bear's response, which is more like <sniff sniff>, oh good, food. <amble amble> eat. Sneaking is most likely in its repertoire since it probably doesn't like to have to square up against other predators if it doesn't have to.

romanticinsomniac what exactly is your expertise with bears ? You sound to me like a "know it all" who knows nothing. Bears eat berries primarily, they DO NOT STALK humans. They are territorial and protective of their young, otherwise they WILL NOT approach humans. Only if there is food involved will they get anywhere near humans. They are primarily shy and timid animals.

This film is a joke, bears do not behave this way at all. You're comment saying "if you're in the wild and you see one kiss your a** goodbye" is ridiculous. It should be noted that your icon is a ridiculous lie as well. People like you should be "exterminated".

Who sounds like the know it all?

Aside from the last line, the poster you call a know it all is pretty accurate, unlike the OP who apparently has never even watched a nature show on bears let alone any wildlife.

If bears do not act this way please enlighten us as to what happened to Timothy Treadwell and countless other people whom have been attacked, and in some cases killed, by bears? Oh, and well you're at it, how about the lions that the Ghost and the Darkness movie was based on? Predators can, and will, attack and eat people if they so choose. They can, as the movie says, go rogue and decide humans are much easier prey than their usual prey.

While bears do not normally stalk anything, they can if they have to or are hunting.

Oh, and since you know everything, this is what the Fish and Wildlife Services says about what bears eat, not "pimarily berries" as you say: "Forbs, roots, tubers, grasses, berries and other vegetation, and insects comprise most of the bear’s diet".

Minds are like books, they only function when open.

Bears also forage for nuts and grubs, they will eat a bologna sandwich if you offer it to one. Treadwell got too close and the bear that ate him did not want humans close, Treadwell was taunting the bears and in the end he got what he deserved.

So your only experience with bears is in film? I suggest for your own benefit that you read more from Fish & Wildlife services, check some bear videos on youtube out and gain some more beneficial knowledge other than from films and forums about films. Check out some facts such as bear attacks vs bear sightings. Moose and wolves are more of a threat to humans than bears by far.

Most bear "encounters" occur because a human stumbles upon a bear and startles it or gets in between a mother and cubs, never will they stalk or "hunt" a human or any other species of mammals for that matter, they love salmon though.

I would like to ask if you've ever seen bears in the wild, I have seen quite a few. They are a treat to see in the wild, they can seem playful but generally take off after a minute or so. The only other time they will come close to humans is if they are rummaging through garbage, which happens quite often, mans fault again, not the bears. Bears will also often "bluff" charge, a territorial threat to ward off other animals or humans. I had a huge one a few hundred feet away stomp a bluff charge in my direction, the bear had been gorging on garbage and was very fat, it was more comical than threatening.

This film was criminally stupid, the script seems like it was written by a 4 year old, terrible, stupid, unrealistic film.

No, Treadwell and his bear-phobic girlfriend were in their tent at night when a bear attacked and killed them. It was an older bear who was having a hard time finding enough to eat.

Treadwell didn't taunt the grizzlies, as you claim, he successfully lived in their midst in a tent for a dozen summers (!). He testified in the documentary "Grizzly Man" (2005) that he was fully aware of the life-threatening danger of the bears, but he's learned how to live among them year after year. His secret was that you can't make yourself look weak, like a victim; you have to show yourself friendly, but strong.

Occasionally, visitors to the remote Alaskan park did throw rocks at the grizzlies -- which might seem like taunting -- but they actually did this to sway the bear away from them, which is what rangers instruct visitors to do if a bear came too close.

Good for you.

Grizzly bears weigh closer to a ton...Bart Sr weighed 1700 lbs...but they can walk silently through the bush. It's their territory. They are bears, it's what.they do.

Sometimes writers make mistakes. They screw up and use the.wrong.word, like stalk instead of hunt...so maybe let it go? ;

Silently moving around 1700 lbs is impossible. It doesn't matter what they want to do, broken branches and leaves will definitely be heard.

Friends of mine on a hunting party (dropped in the middle of nowhere by heli, only to be picked up in 3 weeks) surprised a bear and had to kill it, after that they where hunted for 3 weeks by a female, possibly the mother. She stalked them every night just outside of the campfire glow. They showed me the video, it was scary as hell. They finally killed the second bear when she attacked at night. Without all the video and photos you would think they had made it up, it was a complete horror story and very sad they had to kill two bears.

Yes you are being trolled

CriticismHurts,
This was a B movie, you have to realize that, but animals have been known to occasionally adopt unusual behavior, such as the famous Ghost and the Darkness lions from Tsavo, Africa. They were two male lions that hunted together and actually stalked the railroad camp. One lion alone, they estimated, killed over 135 workers! This is highly unusual behavior for lions. You can read more about it here:

"If you're in the wild, and you see a bear, you're done for."

That's really not accurate at all. Bears can be curious or avoid a human altogether if they see one. Rarely will a bear just mindlessly charge at a human for absolutely no reason.

There are factors such as the bear being territorial, protecting its nearby Cubs, or its hungry. It depends on the bear as far as aggressive level goes, but they rarely will just go after people "just because."
