I miss the 'murder replay'

I miss the days of the crime drama that would 'replay' the murder at the end so that you could see who did it and how (and probably why).

I know what I'm describing sounds like 'dumbing-down' which is usually to be avoided, but having invested two hours into watching shows like "Vera" or "Lewis" I would quite like to see who committed the murder, because just adding a casual aside into the script of 'and of course Mr Brown killed Miss Jones because he was being blackmailed' just leaves me wondering, who was Mr Brown? And was Miss Jones the mother or the daughter?

As a sphisticated television watcher I shouldn't need to have the solution spelled out to me (a la "Murder She Wrote"), but there is something to be said for this method of story telling, particularly for mysteries. It leaves the viewer with a story they can remember.

Thank you for your post Malice, you completely understood the point I was trying to make. I thought I was going to be hammered by people saying that they don't need to be talked down to.

Yes, I though both episodes of Vera and all the episodes of Lewis could have all done with a summary from the killer's point of view.

If done well, the summary can give the viewer that moment of shock realization as the truth dawns. Look at the Sixth Sense, for example.

So please, all you mystery writers, bring back the murder recap!

You will love Poirot and Miss Marple then, they still have the murder replay in every episode.

I also prefer mysteries with 'murder replay'.
